post-hurricane roll call!

how is everyone doing?

the storm weakened/stayed more west before it hit us, so it could have been much worse.  We lost a few small branches but overall, we were lucky.  We never lost power (but a big chunk of our town has been out almost 24 hours with no real estimate for when it will be back).  Some 700,000 MA residents lost power and this morning I heard at least 300,000 still didn't have power.

Re: post-hurricane roll call!

  • we survived just fine. LOTS of branches/twigs down in our yard.

we never lost power, it just flickered a bit.

My parents in VT are another story...they are fine, but I think stranded as they are up on a mountain but many roads into/out of town are washed out. They have not had power or phones since 2pm yesterday...I was able to finally reach dad on his cell. They have a generator so they should be good for a while!

  • We were fine, there were a lot of branches and leaves all over the place this morning and now I really need to get my car cleaned.

We lost power yesterday afternoon for about an hour, I was relieved it's usually an hour or 24 + hours, one co-worker is still without power.  It could have been much worse.

  • We survived-- it looks like the park that we live on lost a lot of branches-- I'm hoping for a full report when DH walks the dog today. Other than that, I think our electricity flickered during the night but that's about it.

My friend in the town just north of us lost power Saturday night and doesn't know when it will be restored...

Claire- I'm so sad for VT. UVM canceled their first day of classes/ closed the university. That NEVER happens!

  • Very anticlimatic for me. According to my FB feed, there's a lot of flooding and was a lot of power out in north Jersey, but we were totally fine. We did sleep in the living room just in case, which was also great b/c I had no idea it was raining until I went to the bathroom....SO much quieter than the attic bedroom!

I did go to the house we're buying last night and there's some water in the basement. I can see where its coming in, so hopefully its an easy fix. Probably 1/4 to 1/2 inches across 40% (pooled in the middle). I'm probably going to go over with a wetdry vac tonight and clean it up. So, this morning I'm researching basement sealing to see what it'll cost us (besides plugging where I am hoping the leak is). Chris is freaked but it is SUCH a common problem here and this is a 1928 house and its not that much water for a record August of rainfall BEFORE the storm. We already knew we needed a dehumidifier...

  • No issues for me.  Most people around us lost power (my parents are out), but it hardly flickered at our house.  Pat was on duty all day dealing with trees and wires down, but was home around 2am.

The storm came up a lot further west then I thought it was going to.

  • Luckily we didn't have any damage at our house. Just leaves and sticks. We did lose power from 7:50am to 1:10pm yesterday. I wasn't home for most of it; my friend's bachelorette party was Saturday night and I slept at her house. Somehow she didn't lose power even though just up the street one way there was a big tree across the whole road and in the other direction where were some down wires. Thankfully there was another side street that wasn't a dead end I could get to so I could get home.

  • Oh, you know, sunny and hot Wink

Just kidding. I'm glad it sounds like everyone is ok with fairly minimal damage. I was flipping through channels on the guide yesterday and about every 15 channels there was one dedicated to Irene coverage so I figured it must have been a big deal (I admit to not seeking out news on it because I am not really affected at all).

Emily - Basement waterproofing is big here. It can get pretty expensive depending on the size of the basement and the type of waterproofing you have to do. Apparently there are two ways to seal (at least from what I've gathered from friends and family who have had to do it)- from water coming up through underground ground and from water coming down from the surface. If you have to do both, it could get pricey. I don't know too much about it, though, since we do not have a basement.

  • All is well in CT.  There are still A LOT of people without power, but we got ours back at 1:30am.  It scared the heck out of me when everything came on!  My in-laws in one town lost power at 6am yesterday and still don't have it back, my other in-laws didn't lose power until 9:30 last night and still don't have it back.  My MIL and FIL never lost power in Hartford.

I got an automated call on my cell at quarter to ten last night that we had work today and if all else failed b/c we were so bored by the end of Sunday, we were going to shower at MIL & FIL's house and then come to work anyway (I'm at work now).  Luckily, we got our own power back and didn't have to worry about logistics.  Most of my coworkers here still don't have power at home, but opted to come in to use the gym shower and alleviate boredom and cabin fever. :)  I think there are just a lot of trees down on power lines and localized inland flooding.  We have a small leak in our basement (as in it was contained by a few old towels) due to a crack that we had already known about and the builder had sealed, so we'll be calling them back to see if they'll come back and re-seal it, but no other damage.

The wind last night was worse than it was Saturday night.  It was downright creepy at times to hear it howling.  Maybe it was just b/c we were hanging out with candles??  We've had Nor'Easter blizzards that were equivalent to this storm and have never lost power in them, so it was odd for us to be without it!

  • Glad you all are OK.

We've been having some serious heat here.  On Saturday it got up to 114 degrees.  The heat won't be going away until later this week, if that.

  • Jo, its definitely a down-from-the-surface issue. I know it can be $$$ but I am thinking we'll see what we can do ourselves before hiring someone. I know tons of people w/ sump pumps etc, and its such a common problem, but it has to be manageable since so many people have finished basements.
  • I am glad it sounds like everyone survived with little to no damage. We just had a lot of rain and some high winds over night on Saturday. Nothing too bad. There were lots of leaves and small branches down in our neighborhood. I heard about some bigger trees going down and causing power outages but they didn't affect us. I think Southern VA was hit much worse.

Kara how did your parent fare?

Concrete is so porus that it can get waterlogged and eventually leak into the basement.  When we finished our basement we put a primer down on the floor that was a pressurized sealer so any water that was being soaked up couldn't pentrate the top surface.

We also had a leak at the bottom of the concrete block wall.  We patched this, used a waterproof primer and sealer, and then painted over that.

Next we regraded around our house so that the ground sloped away from the walls, helping the water to drain away from the house.

Lastly, we extended our roof gutter drains away from the house to 4 feet.

If you don't already, you may want to look into adding a sump pump / drainage tile system.  That will help tremendously.  We have a sump pump with a back up on the side ready to go should our main fail.

The other thing would be to trench away from your house and see that the first 3-4 feet of the wall is sealed and wrapped especially if the water coming is is fro mthe surface water.

Kara how did your parent fare?

My mom has been on the Cape all summer actually and she stayed with us (planned before we knew about the hurricane) this weekend.  She went back this morning and has no power and was told it will likely be days before it comes back.  Otherwise things there are good.

I think their house in VA is fine - haven't really heard otherwise and I know I would have if something had happened.

    Thanks for asking!
