ideas how to green up preschool snack time?

Each student has to take turns bring snacks for a week, the teacher wants them already divided up in to little baggies for each kid.  That is alot of platic bags!

I think I have enough of the little ziploc/glad plastic snack size cup things that I could wash each time.  But does anyone have any other ideas for less waste or how to do this?  I don't think the snacks will always fit into the plastic cups.

  • That's tough.  Can you buy pre-packaged food in biodegradable packaging?  I haven't looked at the packaging, but a few of Rowan's organic snacks are in pre-packaged boxes.  Or, you can buy small paper bags at the local craft store and ask that they be recycled or sent back to you to recycle.  The top can be folded down and stapled.

  • one vote for a lazy teacher - it's not that hard to give the kids paper towel placemats and use a measuring cup to scoop from a bowl, or tongs and a plate.

and it is well known in preschool that best practice is letting the kids serve themselves.

sorry, I know that doesn't help you.

I like the paper bag suggestion if the teacher won't consider another way to serve snack.

I didn't think "lazy teacher" as much as I thought that it's probably to keep the germ share to a minimum. I have no suggestion though. And do you really want to be washing a classroom full of plastic cups?
  • It takes a long time to pass snacks out to a room full of hungry kiddos, too :)

Can you give some examples of foods you'd like to have as options?  Any restrictions?
Also, how many kids and what age(s)?

  • Are there restrictions like 'no home made'?

I really like the brown bag idea.  And hello...hand puppets after snack!

  • I like the paper bag idea too. I bet you could buy some at a party store. You might even have your DC help you decorate them if you wanted.
  • I saw something on Pinterest where people were running their brown paper sandwich bags through their inkjet printer and printing pictures, messages or names on them. I know it's totally not part of the "green up" concept of this post but was totally adorable.

  • Ditto the paper sandwich bags!  Ask the teacher (since she's the one who's being lazy IMHO) to collect the bags at the end of the day and you can compost them!

  • Maybe she plans on reusing them.  I worked at a preschool and I can tell you that zip lock bags were not in our supply room...

  • Maybe they don't have supplies such as plates, cups, etc. and don't want you to bring in a box of something for them to have on the tables. You should ask what other options you have or the reason for the plastic bag request. It may be a school regulation and not a teacher regulation.
