You guys who coupon...

I've been couponing on and off for a few years.  Is it just me, or have the sales at Shaw's been really crappy lately?  I wouldn't normally shop there; I just make a trip a week for the deals, but there hasn't been anything worth getting for me in a loooooooong time.  To be fair, I've been "off" for several weeks, so maybe I missed something fantastic.

Re: You guys who coupon...

  • I agree! I only really got into couponing the past 6 months or so. Granted, I also haven't been as focused on it lately, but it seemed like there were tons a great deals at Shaws when I started but not too many lately. Although I did go for the the BOG2 english muffin and BOGO bread deals last week.

  • I agree, it's been a bit slow.....I have enough granola bars to last a while :-)

  • I've always thought their awesome deals wax and wane. Of course, what I think is a great deal may not be what you think is a great deal.

This week I picked up the BOGO lunch box snacks (Oreos, Teddy Grahams) and the bag of lunch box chips. Back to school sale, apparently.

Next week will probably be a sale on sodas, hot dogs, corn, and other picnic type foods for Labor Day. I'm hoping for a good sale on Diet Coke. Smile

I have noticed that Shaw's has lowered their prices on a lot of items in the last several months so that they are only a little more expensive than other stores instead of wildly more expensive. Shaw's is the closest store to me so if I only need a few items I'll go there even if it does cost me a couple of bucks more.

  • I don't coupon, well.

But Mainley, just curious... Have you been to the other new(ish) grocery place near you?  I can't think of the name right now but it's Save & something?  I've been curious about it but never stopped in.

  • I need a good DC sale bad, and you raise a good point about Labor Day.  I drank our last can of pop this morning, so I'm kind of over a barrel for at least one case. ;)

Save-a-Lot. Yeah, I go in occasionally. I live within walking distance.

It's not a regular grocery store like Shaw's or Hannaford. About 80% of what they well is private label (store brand) and the rest is brand name stuff that varies based on what kind of deals they get from manufacturers. The selection is very small, which is part of their strategy -- easy in and out with low prices. For example, if you want ketchup, they have it -- one brand and one size bottle -- take it or leave it.

I think Save-a-Lot's prices are comparable to Walmart's store brand items. Since I usually need to buy other stuff at Walmart anyway, I go to Walmart for most of my grocerry shopping (except for produce, which I usually get at Shaw's -- Walmart's produce is not great).

  • This week will definitely be a lot of BBQ items. I've been doing pretty well still. I stocked up on the multipacks like Mainely did. I also took advantage of the $2 off coupons in the booklets in store so that made those even cheaper. I've got lots of nutri gran and granola, but DH eats 2 a day so those will go quickly. I did manage to score free milk and a few free things of carrots last week.

I've been disappointed in CVS lately, that's where I usually do awesome and it's been slowing down. I can't wait for the winter sales so I can really stock up on canned goods etc.
