Ceiling fans

Would you put in a ceiling fan if it had to be off center?

DS's room has lot of angled ceilings, so there is a "boob" light (lol) right now that is centered, but if we wanted to install a fan (which over the last 2 days when the A/C hasn't kept up very well, I have wanted to do!), we would have to install it off center so the blades don't hit any of the angles.

I don't think it's that big of a deal, but DH is afraid it would look weird off center, and thinks it might put off buyers in the future (we aren't planning on going anywhere - so I am not sure why he cares about the buyers aspect!).

Honestly, when we bought the house, I remember thinking that if we did fans, we would have to redo the light placement.  If I saw them already installed (off center), it wouldn't bother me a bit - b/c you can obviously see why they couldn't be centered (or they would hit the angled ceiling!) and then I wouldn't have to be dealing with it now!

Re: Ceiling fans

  • is the ceiling too low for you to install a fan where the light is and use extension poles? you can get them up to 3 feet i think, which should be enough clearance for your ceiling.

you can also get fans with shorter blades.

I'd go one of these routes first, if possible.

Then, I'd probably just install off center because I think all bedrooms need ceiling fans :)

    This. Exactly.

  • i would replace the light fixture with a ceiling fan that has lights.

We upgraded to ceiling fans in every room when we built this house; couldn't live without them.

  • There are small ceiling fans for kids rooms too, building on Melissa's idea.

  • It's a typical ceiling height - 8 ft?  - and the light is right near the angle, so I would have to get a fan that would extend maybe 2 feet down to clear it, even if it's a short blade.  I'll have to measure to be sure.

Here is a pic of when we were just putting together the baby room a few years ago, but it's the best one of the light fixture right near the angled part (scroll to the right).

I might be able to get a small blade one in there extended down a bit.  It just can't wobble!  haha.  I'll have to do some measurements and see.  I see a bit of trial and error in our future!  Obviously, I don't want to have to move the hole for the wires, unless necessary, so we'll try to make it work.

  • in a room with wacky ceilings like that, i don't think it matters.  i wouldn't put it too low, for sure.

our living/dining/kitchen is one big ceiling, and the ceiling fan is not centered at all.  i never even noticed it until iwas looking to see if ours were...lol.
