Can anybody recommend their favorite dog friendly beach? Also, do you think it will be really crowded over the holiday weekend?

Re: Dog friendly beaches?
Long Beach has one and HUntington Beach has one. I have not been to Huntington, but I heard it's pretty good. Long beach is clean enough and there i parking, but it's a PITA in a lot of ways. Dogs are not allowed ANYWHERE except inside the orange cones, so you cannot walk on the strand at all- in fact, the life guards will yell at you from their towers to get off the strand (not that I've ben yelled at.....). So you can only walk across the path and then directly into the cones. Also, people are a little stupid and sit right outside the cones and eat, so some dogs (ahem, mine) like to check out the food. My pups have great recall, but there is no boundary so if your dog does not, the dog could just run away.
There are no other legal dog beaches in LA. However, there are places in Malibu (usually right off PCH) where there are coves and you can sort of run out in the area. There are also some similar coves in Palos Verdes. This is usually where I go.
And I fully anticipate that all the beaches will be busy. I've had better luck going at 5pm or so, when more people have left and the sand isn't so hot.
Have fun!
