I guess I will say under 200, but I have never had a car payment and would like to keep it that way.

$200 and below. I've never had one higher than that because I've always put down a sizable downpayment and that is what made sense for my income level. It's definitely possible that when we buy new cars in the future that we'll have one higher than that simply because our income is higher. DH's car is paid off and I make the last payment on my car this month (woohoo!) so we will be enjoying that and won't be planning to get new cars any time in the near future.

$250 or less. XH has one that is over $400 and I always thought that was asinine.

Mine currently falls into the "under $300" range. Next go around id like to go.under $200.

Totally dependent on HHI. I have no issues buying a $60k car if my income supported it. Also, I find that lots of people are frequently surprised by what that payment on a $20k-$30k car (standard price for a new vehicle) would be. It's often higher than you think.

Preferred is around 300. As our HHI has increased, our car payments have decreased. Six years ago, our combined car payments were in the 800s, but now it is less than half.

Our last two cars (2003 and 2004) were new.  Both payments were around $500-600.  Both were also paid off way ahead of schedule.  I'd never buy new again and I would pay cash in the future unless I got a really great rate from a dealership on a 2yr old car.

I don't think I'd ever be comfortable with more than maybe $400/mo. The car I could afford might be nicer if HHI increased, but I'd want to put enough down that the payment stayed reasonable. 

Considering DH nor I have never been unexpectedly out of work, we're both still super paranoid about the possibility. We both cringe at the thought of a significant payment to which we are committed for a considerable length. Obv we have a mortgage, but other than that, no thanks.

Under $350. Right now we don't have a car payment, but that will be changing soon since my car is slowly but steadily falling apart.
