When to plant mums?

Hello - I am very new to gardening and potting flowers.  I currently have our summer flowers out on our porch in pots.  I'm wondering when is the right time to plant mums and how long do they typically last?  I'm in Chicago, FWIW.  Tomorrow it's supposed to be 95, but it could be snowing in a month. Crying

Re: When to plant mums?

  • I planted my first mums this last weekend.  You can start now - whenever they start showing up for sale is when you can most often start planting. They will last until your first hard frost.

  • Thank you!  That is very helpful.
  • Snow in Sept. is pretty rare, and if it does, it'll be short lived.  Your mums are likely to live near or past Halloween.  Enjoy the mums!

  • I think all she was doing was indicating how CRAZY mother nature has been near the Chicago area this past year.  I live in Chicago, too...one day (like today) it'll be 100 and a couple days later 60!

Anyway, mums really are great up until there's frost on the ground.
