I called to make an appointment for DS's 6 month well visit on July 18. They gave me an appointment for August 17. On August 8th, I took DS to the ER because he was projectile vomiting for an hour. He turned out to be fine, but the discharge instructions said to follow up with his regular pedi within 48 hours. The next day I called the pedi to make a f/u appointment. They told me they had nothing open until the 17th. I told them I already had an appointment on the 17th so I guess we'd just have to skip the ER f/u.
Then they called me on August 15 to tell me that the 17th was going to be a training day so they had to move my appointment. The next available slot they had was the 30th at 1345. So I showed up yesterday at 1330. The A1C at the desk tried to tell me that my appointment was at 0900 that morning. Um, no. I had my calendar in my hand when I made the appointment and it was at 1345. Too bad for me, I have to call and reschedule - he can't schedule me a new appointment right there, I have to call. I go out to my car and call, and the same F*@%ing A1C answers the phone. I was so tempted to walk back inside and schedule the appointment on the phone while standing in front of him at the desk. But I don't think I have the balls to be that big of a ***.
The next appointment he can give me is not until September 19th - a whole month after DS turned 6 months and two months after I initially called to schedule the appointment. I told him that Tricare guarantees he will be seen within 30 days of the initial call to make the appointment for non-urgent care, a rule they already violated by canceling my August 17th appointment. I told him I wanted a referral to a civilian pedi in town. He had the nurse call me back and she actually gave me one - score, since DS's pedi sucks balls anyway.
Re: S/O KC's Tricare Story (kinda BR, I guess)
This would have been priceless for sure! I've learned that being an azz is typically the only way to get anything done at a MTF unfortunately.
No doubt. I would have sent j and his minions to do your bidding for a month.
Oh my gosh, that's hilarious that you thought about doing that.
I'm glad you got a referral!
Too bad DS was already buckled into his carseat. That stupid 5-point harness and its intimidation tactics.
THIS is exactly why I am hating seeing a Pedi at the MTF. I call a month before for J's 4 month appt and they don't have anything available for 6 weeks! That is just insane to me. So he had his 4 month appt at 4 1/2 months.
In addition to that, I had a question that I really needed an answer to. I called to leave a message with them so that the nurse could get back to me and they were closed for an exercise for the rest of the day at noon on a thursday. So I had no way to get in touch with them.
Things like that frustrate me. If it were for myself I wouldn't care. But when you have a young baby and things come up and you need to speak with a nurse or doctor, it's frustrating to not be able to get in touch with someone. If I were seeing a pedi off base, things like that would be a non issue.
That blows. It's the same here.
Non related, but I lurve your siggy. I'd definitely be the slow gazelle in a lion attack.
Three years ago, when DH and I were trying desperately to get into the IVF program at Walter Reed, I had more an my share of frustration. The secretary/admin staff acted as the "gatekeeper". On one hand, I understand the need. But, they should either properly train said "gatekeeper" or give him/her access to necessary info. I was told that DH needed certain blood tests completed before we could be accepted into the program (and timing was key--they due IVF cycles only four times a year. We were going to be within driving distance of WRAMC for six months--a very limited window!). We drove through a Tropical Storm (Hannah, if I remember correctly) from Fort Lee to WRAMC (2.5 hours each way) on a Saturday. That Monday, I got the call saying we were in! I asked about the results from DH's blood work. She asked, "What blood work?" We did that drive because some paper pusher didn't know what she was talking about.
I get the frustration. It all makes me laugh when folks say military healthcare is "free"--oh hell no! They take payments in angst, frustration and tears!
I'd be chanting "Do it. Do it. Do it." I'm glad you were able to get a referral to a civilian pedi.
That would have been priceless and I would have wanted to see that on You Tube!!!
