houseplants with bugs

One of my houseplants recently got these small gnat-like bugs.  I grew it from a cutting and it was FINE for a couple months.  Then, I brought it to my office and (maybe?) overwatered it.  Now it has bugs.  I moved it outside to eliminate the bugs from being inside, bought some kind of a spray from Target, and have been spraying it with that every few days for the last week.  They're better, but not gone.

Any home remedies that are effective?

Re: houseplants with bugs

  • Try spraying it with liquid soap and water solution.
  • Same problem in my house, will try the soap thing. Will that get rid of them or do you have to keep doing it to keep them away? Thanks!

  • So, I'm doing the liquid soap and water thing.  Still have bugs.  I just started it yesterday though, so I'll keep it up for a few days and see.  In the meantime, was it overwatering that caused this?  I do NOT want to make this mistake again!  Thanks!

  • I had this problem once and i believe I put some water in a container with a little dish soap (swish it to make it a little sudsy) then covered it with saran wrap and held it on with a rubber band. Poke little holes in the top. Then set it by the plant. The bugs will be attracted to it and get in but then won't be able to get back out, I think they drown.
