Didn't Get That One Either...
So I got a form letter saying I didn't get the job I interviewed for last week. I am seriously at a loss for what to do. There are really no jobs anymore. School's been in everywhere now for at least a week. Something could still crop up if someone quits or goes on leave but there are so many people looking for jobs still. The public district in this area has had a hiring freeze (won't hire anyone that isn't already working in that district). That's LAUSD, which is huge. Anything outside that area would be like a 2 hr commute. So I've only been able to apply for charter and private schools. There are a lot of charter schools here but still haven't gotten anything and most schools that do have openings are too far away.
ETA: If I subbed I could really easily lose my unemployment and if I wasn't working FT we'd need that. DH only gets disability money right now which isn't much. He can't work physically FT and he can't work even PT (except less than the disability money) without losing his disability money. It's a Catch 22 for both of us. I have thought about tutoring again because I could do that while getting unemployment better than subbing but I feel like 2 years of doing that doesn't look good on the resume. And I wouldn't get health benefits or many hours. I did that last year because I didn't find a FT job and we didn't know where we would find wheelchair accessible housing so it was hard to even figure out where to apply. We didn't find a place until after schools had hired. This job that I interviewed for last week was someone who quit or went on leave. That's all that's out there now, temporary contracts, which are always scary because they're the first people to be laid off when there's budget cuts. But that's the best I can hope for.

I thought you could work a certain amount and still get UE benefits. Or something like reduced UE benefits depending on how much you're earning. I can't imagine they'd take away the benefits if you're not earning at least as much. Am I wrong?

I can apply for other stuff but there's not much else I'm qualified for. I've been in the classroom for 5 years now. I could apply at bookstores (where I worked before teaching) but they don't hire FT when you start. You have to work PT (too much to keep unemployment) and don't get benefits usually for 6 months. This would be true in most retail jobs. I could apply at museums but I haven't worked in them for 8-10 years and I was never more than a desk clerk (and I interned with curators in college). I'm qualified for little in the museum world, though I do have the right BA for it. Plus there aren't many jobs in that field either.

I don't know if this would be up your alley, but have you considered teaching at ESL/English as a Second Language schools? I think they require a certain certificate, but as you're a licensed teacher (I think?) how hard could that be? Um. I don't know, actually... but it's an idea... maybe?
