Waiting awhile to have kids...?

We will have been married for 3 years in Dec. and we're planning to wait for another 5 before we start a family. (I'm turning 23 this year)

I think it'll give us time to really know each other, have our finances secure (we're in the process of buying a house right now), and travel (we want to visit every continent).

Thoughts on a long time between marriage and kids?

Re: Waiting awhile to have kids...?

  • Absolutely!  Enjoy the time that y'all have together as a couple.  DH and I are discussing having them sooner rather than later, but that's because I'm 28 and he's 35 now, so if we waited like that then it would be harder.  What you're doing makes total sense Andee.
  • Both my and DH parent's were married 5 years before having us and that's how long we are planning for as well.  By then my Master's should be finished and we'll have some more money in the bank.  We still have another 2 to go.

I think having that "just us" time is very valuable.

  • I agree.  We plan on maybe having kids in the future (haven't decided yet), but it definitely won't be any time soon.  We're 25, just got married a year ago, and we plan to wait at least another 5 years (probably more) before even considering having children.  We want to focus on our marriage first and enjoy life with just the two of us.  We also love to travel and hope to do more of it before having kids and securing our finances.  It's a huge decision so we want to be fully ready and as prepared as we can!

  • You all sound like you have very sound reasons for starting soon or waiting. Thanks for the input! My DH just got out of the military, where I was surrounded by girls who seemed to be itching to start families way too early, so it's nice to see other educated ladies out there who are waiting until mid to late twenties!
