UO Thursday

Is it Thursday? This week has been both long and short!

My UO is teaching-related. A student yesterday shared a story with me about how a middle school teacher (25 at the time) took the student and her friend to a concert in Tulsa. The teacher was married, and had the two girls stay over at her house the night before (they all lived in OKC). The next day, they went to the concert in Tulsa with the teacher, her husband, and her husband's friends. They stayed in a hotel. The student shared a bed with the teacher. Parents knew all of this and allowed the girls to go.

I think it's crossing a line professionally, and so does a co-worker. The student sees nothing wrong with it (though the other students in the room had the same shocked face I did). My H sees nothing wrong with it. He thinks I'm being overly cautious. Perhaps all of my experiences with totally unprofessional teachers back in my hometown has tainted my opinion? What say you, OK nesties?

This is jumping WAY over the line, IMO. I refuse to even be FB friends with my students--I can't even imagine doing something like having a student spend the night and taking them to concert.

We have a school policy that forbids "friending" current students on Facebook. After they graduate it's fine, but I'm pretty picky about who I friend even then.

I once took a couple of orchestra kids to dinner and the symphony, and a band kid to the jazz lab for pizza and jazz, but it was a reward and obviously directly related to the class. I went to dinner once with my newspaper staff and have met the yearbook staff for breakfast at IHOP for a morning meeting. It's always a group, it's always related to the class. I do not understand why a teacher would ever treat a middle schooler like they are a friend. I also do not understand why the parents were okay with this!

I think it's crossing way over the line. What if one or both of the students accused her or her H or her H's friend of doing something inappropriate (even if nothing happened)? It would be their word against the students'. That probably wouldn't happen, but you never know what some kids will say for attention at that age.

This is one reason why our district no longer allows students and teachers to stay in the same room during overnight trips. When I was senior class sponsor, my co sponsor and I got our own room during the senior trip. Before that the sponsor had always roomed with a student(s). I don't care who the student is, I wouldn't stay in the same room as them. For one thing, I like my privacy and for another, you just can't trust a teenager with your job IMO.

I can't recall ever staying in the same room as a teacher, but both my debate coach and band director were men. But, they didn't share rooms with the boys, either.

When I take my band kids on overnights, like our last trip to Dallas, the trip company gives the director their own room automatically, with a king bed, so no sharing. I like my big bed to myself. I did have a student barge into my room (and then the friends followed) to gawk at my view and my big bed lol. I quickly ushered them out!

  • Yikes Fuzzy!  That is certainly crossing the line! I wonder if the student and the teacher had a relationship prior to the teacher becoming a teacher? For instance, I could see me being okay with this sort of thing if this particular teacher had been my child's babysitter at some point, if that makes sense.  Other than that...yikes!!!

  • The only way that this isn't crossing a line is if the student and student's parents had a personal relationship with the teacher (relative, friend). There are a few teachers that I had throughout middle school and high school that this would have been no problem with - in the same breath, they were either my aunt, uncle, cousin, or have been friends of my parents' for years and years.

Otherwise, I think it's crossing the line. I can't imagine a parent being okay with it - even a super relaxed parent (as mine were/are). Is it possible that there was a relative/friend relationship with the student/teacher and that part of the story just didn't surface?

  • My UO--I'm looking forward to the new season of Kendra. I'm not even sure why I like that show, because I feel like I should be annoyed by her, but I like her show. I feel the same way about Tori and Dean.
  • I screwed our budget for the month of August.  We can make it up in September but it sucks DH has to suffer although he is not entirely innocent (just less guilty than I).
  • I think Fuzzy's story is crossing the line. I remember a teacher in middle school taking a group of girls out to Starbucks before school once a week, and even then I gave THAT the side-eye, and that's nothing compared to sleeping in the same bed and stuff. That's just strange.

I am right there with you. I love trashy reality TV shows. Real Housewives of OC, NJ, ATL, NY, BH are my major weakness.

DH and I were actually joking about this last night. It's the perfect response to Michelle Bachman's whole "the earthquake and hurricane on the east coast are God trying to tell Washington something" gaffe.

This is one tiny and terrifying step away from WBC.
  • I hate the newest FB status update supposedly bringing awareness to breast cancer--"8 weeks and craving skittles" or whatever.  So.freaking.annoying.  Like other updates that have gone around before, how exactly is this bringing awareness to breast cancer??

Good to hear this.  I had no idea it was a "breast cancer awareness" thing.  I've only seen one person post something to this effect, so I was thinking (but hoping not) she was pregnant.  It was H's 18 year old cousin.

This is totally what I would have thought. What is it supposed to mean? (and of course, yes, it's asinine. If you actually care donate some time, money, etc. to education and research. Putting an effing cryptic FB status doesnt actually help anyone and in fact 'hides' the discussion from anyone not in on your dumb joke).

My MIL sent me the email describing how to come up with your status, that's how I knew it's supposedly for breast cancer awareness.
And now my 20 yr old cousin is trying to convince my aunt that she is not, in fact, 4 weeks pregnant and craving twizzlers.

WOW! I didn't see the 'Kidding' part of your post until someone quoted you. And I agree with others, definitely reminds me of WBC.

Ugh. I *loathe* these status update awareness things. Definitely one of my top five pet peeves.

  • I've been known to become irrationally angry and vent that anger on FB about the breast cancer awareness BS games. Hate them. HULKSMASH.
  • I've only been here a little over two years and I'm already sick of Oklahoma weather porn. Fires, snowpocalipse (= 4 inches), a 1% chance of tornadoes, etc. I get the need to have a scrolling info bar on the TV, but can we actually have some non-weather related news on the news???

Yes. In fact, I saw on the news this week a story about a bicycle that had been chained to a school zone sign on sooner road for like a year. I think I'd prefer weather.
  • Ugh. I saw this, too. Serious. There's other sh!t happening in the world, folks!
