What to do with unwanted fish?

We have some fish that we no longer want. There's a gourami, an algae eater, and one other small one. Does anyone know what to do with fish when you no longer want them? Can we bring them to the pet store? Do any of you want our fish? DH jokingly mentioned "setting them free" in our pond, but I'm pretty sure that's cruel, right? It's not like setting Nemo free in the ocean.

When we moved to FL my dad decided not to transport his saltwater fish tank so he sold all of his fish to the pet store that he had bought them from. They were much larger than when he bought them so they were actually worth a decent amount of money and the pet store really wanted them. I would try calling a pet store (not a chain like petsmart or petco) and asking. They may not be willing to pay for them but they may take them.

If you don't find a pet store to take them then I would offer them on Craigslist.

My brother might be interested. He's got a couple tanks. He could also recommend some good fish stores in jacksonville. Although I think when he had to take a fish back one time I'm not sure if they paid him for it or not... Anyway I can ask him if you want.

There's a place called Blazin' Reptiles next to Marshall's on San Jose Blvd.  Maybe they will take them.

We did the same thing as lucky when a few of our fish got too large. They were happy to buy them from us.

Pet stores will almost always at least take them back if not buy them.

And your fish would most definitely die in your pond. They are tropical, so the climate won't support them. They might be okay for a week or so, but as it gets cooler, they'll kick it for sure.

Thanks! I don't care about anyone buying them. DH just wants to get rid of them. I'll try the pet stores.

They are fish, not puppies. Pretty sure they have no attachment to us. It's ok ladies.

This made me giggle. As long as they're given to someone who can take care of them & not released in the lake (not even ok for Nemo, Sikes) I don't see what's sad about it. Fish can be a pain in the ass. My guess would be that Mr. Sikes doesn't want to deal w/the tank up-keep.

I agree that re-homing is the best option. We had a big tank with a lot of fish and it does get to be a PITA. We downgraded to a 5 gallon tank for our 1 remaining fish (the others all died of natural causes over the years) and once he's gone, no more fish for us.
