Re: Friday Eve Randoms
Hi, Diana!
I can't imagine how crazy your week must seen. Hopefully each week of the semester is better than the last, as you settle in to the new routine and reenergize.
Diana, that sounds *crazy*.
Keep sharing, though!
I have news.
I made the ArtPrize Street Team!
They told us to not share it publicly until after they put out their official news release...but this isn't really public, right? I mean...it's just the internet...
Yay!
Wahoo!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats!
Let me know if they need any other help too
Been trying to find a 2nd job since I l lost nanny job about 6 months ago and have had no luck.
Congratulations!
Awesome news, Chymes!
Have fun
Haha, you've become a downstater!
I only laugh because during my tours of duty in TC and Petoskey, I learned for the first time how much "up northers" disdain of we that live downstate. I didn't even know the term downstate, actually.
It's sort of like how much I disdain Lake Michigan tourists
Now L calls me a Detroiter and says I'm a tourist when I come home. I have learned that Detroiters LOVE to tailgate. Care to confirm, GRSP, Tigers, GRKaters?
Only because you asked, I had a major nerd alert moment in CivPro (short for Civil Procedure) today. It came to mind because I'm about to do some prep for that class.
A little background, this class is "lawyer's law" and is all about the rules of the court and how things must be done. Most 1Ls probably find it disorientating, weird and possibly a bit dry. The prof is also a bit intimidating (not quite as scary as Kingfisher from The Paper Chase, but along those lines--he'll keep you on the hook while you sweat if you don't give him an answer he likes), but he does wear bow ties (and is probably younger than 40). I like to think he believes every law student needs a bow tie wearing professor, but I digress.
Anyhow, he's going through material in class, my classmates are panicking about getting called on and I'm thinking "I kinda like this stuff."
It's moments like these that keep me showing up the next day. At this point, sometimes it feels like just moments, but for now whatever gets me through the day is okay.
If they're tailgating, you're doing it wrong.
Detroit has a very unique traffic patterns and driving habits. The stupid drivers of GR are unpredictable. In Detroit, there are stupid drivers, but it's predictable. You'll get the hang of it. Just drink more Vernors and have a few Better Made chips.
DP, I know you're exhausted, but I'm so glad you've had a challenging week. I know you're thriving on it, and that you're up to the challenge.
So, is it kind of like the "first day of school" scenes in Legally Blonde when the profs are being total hard-asses and everyone looks terrified? That is what I'm imagining.
I thought this was going to be about drinking beer before a sporting event.
Me too! So much so, that I read GRSP's response and sat there going "huh??" for five minutes (especially since she mentioned food) before writing it off as some crazy east-side sports thing and moving on.
It's so funny because I tend to be a pretty aggressive driver for GR/west Michigan. As to the tailgating, it's like Detroiters have made up their own speed limits which supersede the posted ones. Until you learn that the "real" speed limit on the Lodge never goes down to 55 mph, you're getting buzzed, tailgated, honked at, etc.
I did get flipped off by someone with out of state plates who I honked at for not following proper merging rules today, so I see that as progress
It must have been the Detroit Popcorn Co. popcorn I ate today...
Yep, pretty much. Fortunately, I have only two classes that are like that (one is CivPro) and in the other the funny thing is that the pro prohibits laptops (which has my whole class freaked out). It's funny how Elle has to go buy a laptop on the first day because she didn't know she needed one, but one of my "hard-ass" profs won't allow them at all.
It's funny that GRSP knew immediately what I was talking about
Funny because I was like, sporting? Wha? And, DP, good for you! You're going native.
Catching up and some thoughts:
- I never knew the phrase "up north" until I began attending GVSU.
- People up north most certainly disdain downstaters (those city slickers!). My firm has an office in TC and there is some animosity there between them and our GR office. I've learned that they soften up to me when I happen to mention where I'm from ("hey, I'm one of you!). Then, they let down their guard a little.
- People from up north are terrified of Detroit drivers. Terrified.
- Detroit, by the way, extends from Flint to Toledo.
- I kind of like lawyers with bow ties. They have a certain hard-ass charm. Although, the only ones I've known have been 55+. A younger one strikes me as being a poser, now that I think of it. He hasn't earned that bow tie yet!
- I also thought the tailgating comment was about sports. And I thought, "Really? I didn't know that Detroiters were that into college football.".
I found it funny because it must have been a Detroit thing. Only you knew that I was talking about driving, not drinking beer before sports and you're a native east sider.
ETA: Or were you confused about my comment "It's so funny because I think I'm an aggressive driver for GR..." That I found funny because you said I was doing it wrong if I'm being tailgated. For someone who is used to doing the tailgating and tends to drive 10 over the speed limit, it's funny to be tailgated or driving too conservatively.
With good reason. Although particularly in the touristy areas like Petoskey and TC they have to deal with Illinois drivers all summer long. **shudders**
On the note of Detroit drivers, one of my classmates is from Colorado and attended undergrad at Cornell. He unfortunately lumped Detroit drivers in with all Michigan drivers. I had to correct him! Some Detroiters seem to have very little perception that there is more Michigan west of I-75.
LOL. I think my classmates would agree that he's earned it. He shares a first name with a certain former classmate of Chymes who is a particularly detested member of congress. How do you have that first name and wear a bow tie?
No, no. I'm with you. I thought it was funny because I wouldn't have ever had sporting in thought spot #1 for the word tailgating.
