So...yesterday was the BIG day. We got the call at 2pm that everything was successfully transferred and the house is now ours! We had an appointment at 6pm to meet with one of the junior agents to officially be handed our keys. (Our lead agent had a performance for her son to attend and her husband was out of town.) We were supposed to meet the junior agent at 6pm to be handed our keys. I was all excited, even bothered to bring makeup to work to put on at the end of day so that it would be all fresh and my cousin was coming, in part so she could take pictures of us being handed our keys. While I was in the car, DH called me to say junior agent called to tell him she wasn't going to meet us (no explanation or good excuse, so I'm guessing she just wanted to go home rather than do her job). Apparently she just hid the keys under something in the yard. ![]()
I'm still upset by this. I was so excited to get our keys and I really wanted pictures of this moment (it's our first house!) All I was able to do was get a picture of DH putting the key in the lock. It was so anti-climatic...it felt more like I was going to a friend's house to water their house plants while they're on vacation.
I did email the lead agent this morning as I felt she really should know what the junior agent did and how disappointed that made me. The lead agent felt really bad and wrote back immediately saying she would be happy to meet us and restage it as she wanted me to be happy. It's not the same but at least we could maybe get our picture...except we'd have no one to take the picture of us both (cousin isn't available today) AND when I forwarded the email to DH, he emphatically wrote back that while he was happy I got that off my chest, he has zero interest in doing that just so I can get my picture. ![]()
((In a side note, on the house shows we watch on HGTV, when people buy a house, the agent usually leaves a little gift like a bottle of wine with a note saying congratulations on your new house. We didn't get anything like that and I was wondering if that's something that does happen in real life, or just on the shows.))
Re: VENT: Anti-climatic :(
I'm sorry! I know its super disappointing when you have an idea of how you want things to go in your head and it doesn't work out. I hope you enjoy the house and get settled in and make it your home.
FWIW - I've bought two houses and it was very anti-climatic. When we bought our house here in Seattle I thought I could make up for not having the pictures from the first house. Not so much. The day we were told our offer was accepted - we drove out to get a picture of the sold sign and the entire sign was already gone.
As far as Realtor gifts - we received nothing with our first house. Second house, our realtor sent us a gift card for a local restaurant about a week after we were living there.
i'm sorry it was so anticlimactic for you.
i don't know if this *really* happens...we didn't get one. but my cousins bff is a real estate agent, and i know she gives out baskets of wine, cheese, etc... but that's all i know about..i don't know anybody who's ever gotten one.

Ok, at least I'm not the only one that it felt anti-climatic for. (where's the emoticon that I'm sniffling and trying to get over it.)
We DID order pizza and ran out to get sparkling wine and had a picnic on our dining room floor (paper towels for plates and clear plastic cups). At least one thing I had envisioned went right
This.
I'm sorry!! I hate when i get my expectations up and people fail me..
there really isn't much worse!
How is the house though??? You gonna share photos???
The house is beautiful. I'm antsy to get out of our crappy, cramped, stuffed to the gills, toddler-feet-running-on-ceiling apartment! This weekend we're going to focus on getting everything out of our storage unit and in to the garage to save another month of that rent. Also planning to move over all the boxes that have been packed in the apartment so we have space to do more packing. Weekend after that we plan to move as much packed stuff as is complete. Weekend of the 17th is then planned to be the big push/final move of all the furniture and anything that remains. That will give us the last weekend to get the apartment all clean for our deposit.
Sarack - I have an album on FB you can see. I shared photos on TN a few weeks ago.
Awww... I am so sorry it did not go as you envisioned. My first house, the previous owners were super nice (we stalked each other on facebook) and left me a coffee table book that they had used when remodeling the home. My agent (who was our agent the second time too) took a 'hit' on the percentage she took and since she can't give me cash legally like that, put it towards my first payment.
The house we just bought a few months ago, our agent took an even bigger hit so we could buy a new washer and dryer (since the house didn't come with one), but no like 'welcome home' gift. I think it really depends on whether the agent does it or not, but I imagine that percentage is really really small and the ones on tv do it to look better (since they're on tv and all).
Both times, we didn't get our keys from our agent and they were left in our mailbox to pick up.
That said? Pictures? Let's see your new house! Have you guys started to move in yet? ^^
They didn't even give us the keys they day we closed. They apparently forgot to drop them off. It was late so we just got them the next day but apparently the were breaking the law.
I have not gotten a gift but I imagine if we used a real agent, we might have. Instead, we used red fine and got 1.5% percent of the commissions back which I liked more.
Hmm, we closed on our house in July and it was fairly similar to what you wanted, I suppose. Our agents (we worked with partners) met us at the house, congratulated us, and handed us the keys, then told us to get in and enjoy the new house. Inside was a bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne and two glasses, which struck me as quite generous and more than I expected.
That said, we didn't actually get the keys until the day after closing, due to scheduling conflicts. So I suppose that part was somewhat anti-climactic. I was just thrilled that we closed on time and had such great agents, loan officer, seller, and escrow office that nothing was delayed.
1) catbus was normal? boring.
