Kuwait

Anyone know anything about Kuwait?  My brother is in the military and will most likely be posted over there.

Just looking for some information.  He should know in the next few weeks.

Re: Kuwait

  • I know it's a dry country. Women are not required to where abayas or head scarves in public. The locals are mostly very wealthy and foreigners do a lot of the work there. I've also heard the buildings are very poorly built and tend to fall apart in under 5 years. Most of the rest of what I know pertains to teaching there. :)
  • A couple of our friends used to live there.  It's completely dry so unless you bring vodka into the country in water bottles (probably not a good idea) or go to one of the bar in the American or British Embassy, you have to make it in your bathtub.  Also, no pork products in the entire country.  Aside from that, they loved it there.  According to them it has a pretty vibrant expat community.
  • I'm an American and I've been in Kuwait for almost 4 years. I introduced myself here once quite a few months ago but (obviously) only really lurk when I have the time to check the board.

Anyway, I'm assuming your brother is US military? As far as I know, military stationed here don't get to leave the base... so I don't know how much information about Kuwait would really be useful to him. Kuwait is a dry country, but there is plenty of alcohol to be had if you know where to look and have a good contact (real stuff is expensive, but there's lots of homemade stuff that really isn't bad if you don't want to pay for the real stuff.) As PP said, it's also pork-free, but the base does have pork products in the PX.

Honestly, despite being a dry country, I really like living here. The expat community is awesome and we've made a lot of great friends. Everything is very westernized so you can get pretty much anything in stores/restaurants you're used to back home. Please feel free to ask if you have any other questions (or you can PM me if I can figure out how to find my messages.) :)
