Diet kids book? Thoughts?
Re: Diet kids book? Thoughts?
I'm 50/50. I appreciate the writer's intent and agree with him in that "diet" isn't a bad word. In the dictionary, to diet really does mean "to select or limit the food one eats to improve one's physical condition or to lose weight." which is good I think. In the book, she also exercises in conjunction with her new healthy diet (i.e. the good way to lose weight) and her main motivation was to be more able/better at playing sports.
The problems with it - apparently the illustrater didn't actually read the story, so made the cover and other pictures more about wanting to look better. The recommended age is too young, and they could easily be confused by the message unless the parent is actually there to explain that a healthy diet and exercise routine can help them feel good and excel in physical endeavors...but making sure to lessen the focus on being popular or "pretty".
