I am loving the name Isla.
How would you pronounce this if you read it? I want to see what first impressions are.
Re: name help
I never know how it's supposed to be pronounced...I thought it was 'Eye-la, silent "s", but I guess not....
Iss-la (more of an "s" sound then a 'z' sound....)
It's "Eye-Lah"!
You know, like isle and island
love is for every her, love is for every him, love is for everyone
It IS with the silent "s." I seriously have NEVER heard this name (as a name for a girl/woman NOT a location) pronounced any other way than "eye-lah."
love is for every her, love is for every him, love is for everyone
It was our girl name for Jude had he been a girl
It's Eye-la, like Kendra said.
It was almost Mara's name but we were worried people would mispronounce it. Little did we know, everyone would slaughter Mara's name too!
This confused me, the locals of the place we went said "Is-lah" and I thought it was "Eye-Lah"
This was my first thought as well

TTC #1 since 08/11 IUI#2 = BFP!
It is eye-lah like island. My name was butchered growing up, but I wouldn't change it, but I don't want to pick a name that she is going to hate!
What do you think about Iyla?? It's more phonetic, but I really like the 's' better.
Don't make it a unique spelling. It's my favorite name ever and fabulous as Isla. People will figure it out. They don't walk around saying Is-land....
I figured that it would be something that would have to be corrected, but once people figure it out, it's a very pretty name! I was looking through nursery pictures for color and fabric inspirations, and saw it on the wall. It actually had the name, then the pronunciation (eye-lah) written underneath, or I never would have figured it out!
After doing some more research, the Spanish pronunciation of the name is "Ees-lah", but the Scottish version, which is the origin in "eye-lah"
I think you take the risk of mispronounciation with a lot of names. I actually NEVER thought of Mara's name being pronounced wrong and people do it all the time (and it honestly makes me crazy but I still loooove her name). I usually just correct them and wonder how they pronounce names like Sara
But yes, it's a beautiful name.
Eye-la
Love it!
I think this is true, but again, some people are bothered by that more than others. My Mom has always hated her name (so much so that she legally changed it) and I think that has colored my perception of unusual names.
guilty
Definatley Eye-Lah! And if you want to spell it "ILA" (I hate writing a capital I with a lower case L since it looks like this "Il" so i capped it all) I have a blanket that needs a home with that name embroidered
Love it! It crossed my mind for J's name but DH shot it down
I love it, too!
And people will mispronounce any name, no matter how common/easy, given the chance. You wouldn't believe how many people call me "Jeannie."
Eye-la. Love it!
People butcher Maren's name all the time. IMO, it hasn't been a big deal. You just correct them and move on. Just part of having a kid with a less common name.
