Poll: Books

Since we're polling here I am curious how many books you have. I don't have very many shoes or purses but books... yikes. For some of us we'll have to estimate. You can either guess how many or give us an idea by saying how many bookshelves/bookcases you have.

Me: I have 3 large (4 shelves or more) bookcases. That's roughly 400 books. Wow. And they're all mine. DH has about 20 that are his separately.

Re: Poll: Books

  • I had quite a few books when I was growing up, but when I left backhome, I came to the US without any. I then didn't buy many since I was broke (student), and because I'm actually finding it hard to read in English. So there aren't many that I love so much that I'm willing to buy and re-read (yet). I probably should read more...
  • One bookcase, less than 100. I've never been one to accumulate books. I read a lot, but I trade online and use the library.
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • I should mention a lot of mine were my dad's or books from college/grad school that I couldn't or didn't want to sell back. They are reference books that yes I do refer to often. I don't have a lot of fiction actually. Most of my fiction books are advanced reading copies that I got free when I worked in a bookstore. I don't actually buy books much.
  • Depending on the year, I read between 50 - 75 books/year.  However, I'm a HUGE library fanatic so I get 90% of my books that I read from the library (the others are usually books sales or borrowed from friends.)  For this reason, I'm having a hard time getting a kindle.  I just love going to the library, getting the books, returning them and so on.  For hobbies, it's my cheapest one :)

YesI loved going to the library as a kid. I haven't as much as an adult but that's probably because for several years I could check out books from the bookstore when I worked there. And I got a lot of free ones. My dad was a college library director so we always had a lot of books around in my family!
  • DH and I have 2 full (floor ceiling) bookcases.  Q alone has over 50 books.  Now that I have my kindle, they come and go into my archives.

(oh, and I'm not including my science/teaching books which are in my classroom I'm sure there are a couple hundred there)

My problem has always been returning them on time.  If I get them from the library, it seems to take me longer to read (and the good ones are always in hard back so they're heavy)
  • Including all my MPA books, I probably have 2 bookcases' worth.  I got rid of a whole bunch when we moved, and now that we have to start going to the laundromat again, I want to start going to the library again, since it's right across the street.
  • My guess is I have between 100-150 books. But that constantly grows thanks to Grad school and having worked at the MLA for a few years.
  • I said "300 or more" but it's probably over 400.  And that's not even counting the kidlet's books!  We have three bookcases packed w/books, random books all over the house and a couple of boxes of books in storage in our garage.  And this is after we got rid of books when we moved to the new place (and when we moved before that).  And we keep pledging not to buy anymore books!  But it's so hard to say no to books... especially when we get them so cheap at library booksales and garage sales!  Oh, and this isn't counting all the books we have on the kindles.  We just love books so much and DH is such a collector.  Even more than me he has a hard time letting go of stuff.  But we're working on purging and not buying so many books... it's just an ongoing process with us.
  • Pretty much what Schmoopie said.

We have 3 book cases (floor to ceiling, several boxes in storage, and tons of random books through the apartment (stacked on night stands, on the shelf under the coffee table, in corners behind chairs). I think we might be book hoarders.

Nick got a kindle though, so I have been making him get rid books that he now has digital copies of, which has paired us down A LOT. Before he got his kindle, we had probably 6 or 7 book cases worth of books.
