Anyone do bookkeeping - without formal training?

DH is considering having me take over the bookkeeping / budgeting for his business.  It's a small family business (5 employees) and I would be working from home.  My background is in counseling but I've been a SAHM since DS was born and would love to continue to stay home for a few more years.  This would be out of my element but doesn't seem impossible.  Does anyone do this without having accounting background?  Thoughts?

Re: Anyone do bookkeeping - without formal training?

  • I don't have experience, but I assume you could do okay. Maybe take a class in QuickBooks if that is the program they use. In the US they have a group called SCORE that helps small business owners for free. Maybe there is something like that near you?
  • My DH does.  He was trained when he was treasurer of two orgs by the previous treasurers, then he learned more from there.  Now he bookkeeps for a couple non-profits.

  • I own my own business and do my own bookkeeping - I'm the only employee, so it's not too complicated. It does get me stressed out at times because there is no one to double check my work and sometimes I make mistakes that end up costing me money, but on the whole it's not too bad. My mom (also a SAHM) did my step-dad's bookkeeping for his dental practice for over 15 years. I think it just takes someone who is organized and good with details. They make great software to help with everything - I have Quickbooks and I love it.

  • As long as you know how to balance and reconcile items then you should mostly be ok. I am assuming he isn't expecting you to do tax preparation? If he is then you might want to get a couple "for dummies" books and brush up but it is certainly not impossible.
  • I'm an accountant but if you planning on having someone outside doing your taxes it might be a good idea to meet up with them when you take over and work with them for a few months so that you know what you are doing.  They can probably help you set up a few standard entries that you only make once a month.
