How do you winterize your roses?
I was curious what/if I should do to winterize my knockout roses? They were really bushy this year, almost overwhelming my sidewalk. I have heard of people almost cutting them down to the ground when they become overwhelming, but I don't know if that would be a very good idea. If I did cut them down dramatically, should I do it now or springtime? is there anything I should be doing to winterize them? I am in Zone 6a if that makes a difference.
Re: How do you winterize your roses?
I don't cut them down dramatically, but I cut at least a few inches off, depending on the rose. My dad cuts them all back, but he has a yard full of shrub roses. I have a few heirloom roses that the seller recommends not cutting back beyond deadheading. Any trimming I did in the fall.
I tented one its first winter, but after that I took my chances and they came back fine.
Our little Irish rose came to us on March 5, 2010
