Talk to me about moving to the Metro West area

My Fi and I just graduated with advanced degrees in education, He got offered a job in the Boston area University, and I was offered a job at an area prep/boarding school.

What towns would you recommend. One school is in Boston, one is near Boston.

What real estate agency do you recommend.

We are moving from NYC.

Re: Talk to me about moving to the Metro West area

  • Welcome to the board!

I recommend renting first. Get a feel for the area and the towns you like before jumping into buying.

"Near Boston" could mean a lot of things. What town or general area is your school in? That will help us narrow down suggestions for you. Do you plan on driving to work or do you need easy access to public transportation? What's your budget? Do you want a city feel or more suburban?
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Hi Thanks for putting me in to thinking mode.

Fi is probably going to be working in Kendall square.

I was offered a job in the Milton / Quincy area

I do not mind driving though, I know take the Red line to Quincy and drive but can I keep my car at the T parking lot?

We are not sure we want to live in Boston, We were both saying we are over living in a city, If it was a nice suberb near the city, that would be ideal, but we do not want to be in the country either.

I own a place that is 1 bedroom in a popular area in NJ across from Manhattan that will sell for 550k I rent it out now for 2800 a month, Not sure if I want to sell that now since its a renters market and rent is going up next month for new tenents to 3000.

Fi owns a place, that he was willed to him from a family member. He wants to sell this place and its estimated to be worth about 750K  With the Market the way it is, i would say 650 is more realistic unless we put money into it before moving.  I would say Our budget depends on what we sell the apartment for, unless we sell both, we are hoping not to get a morgage and buy a place outright.

    Hope this helps?

  • You may want to check out South Boston.  The red line is there to get your husband to Cambridge, and the back roads would let you drive to Quincy/Milton without even touching the highway.  The side closest to the beach is pretty nice -I think it's the east side.

You also may want to look into Davis Square in Somerville, if your office is close enough to a T station to walk from. It's a nice area - lots of restaurants, shops, etc.

Even with the additional info, I'd still suggest renting for a while to get a feel for the area.  Buying is expensive here, and you definitely want to take some time to figure out which area fits you best.

Oh, and as someone who lived on the South Shore (Quincy) and commuted to Cambridge for 4 years, I cannot discourage you enough from living there.  The traffic on 93 is hideous at all times, and the red line ride to Cambridge is soul crushing. (The reverse, which you would be doing, wouldn't be so bad. Though I wouldn't want to do it forever.)

  • Are you looking for a home to grow in to?  Do you want a yard?  Do you care about the public school system?
  • Yes we want to find a home, maybe not a forever home but we are 30, we are getting married in May, and really want to start a family shortly after that. Schools are a big thing to me, I am a believer in public education, though I am working in the private school world. They can go to the school for free, but that is way down the road.By then I could be in the public schools.
  • I'm with 5000Candles and would not recommend living in the Quincy area. As she said, I-93 is a huge PITA and the South Shore is generally not my cup of tea.  Milton and Milton Academy are lovely but, yeah, I still wouldn't live on the south shore.

I still think you should plan on renting first and look into buying once you've had a year or so to figure out what areas you really like, the kind of commute you can handle, get to know the school systems, etc.  It's just not worth rushing into buying when you don't need to.  Coming from the NY/NJ area I'm sure prices here will be perfectly normal and acceptable to you and prices and rates aren't moving significantly upwards anytime soon.

Given the location of your respective jobs, I'd try to live along the red line since both Cambridge and Quincy are on that line.  5000Candles gave you great suggestions for towns.  Cambridge is another obvious choice.  You could also look at Watertown and drive over to the Alewife T stop; there's a big parking lot there (and if you look at the MBTA website it will indicate which stations have lots).

Hope that helps.  Feel free to ask more questions and good luck with the move!

Newton would work, too - I used to live in Newton and drive to Alewife to get to work in Cambridge.   Additionally, Watertown/Belmont are right on the bus line - you can get to Harvard Square in about 20 minutes, and hop on the redline right there.

I hate relying on two different forms of public transpo to get around though and hesitate to recommend that.  There's more chance of things going wrong with schedules, accidents, etc. and it can be hard to get the schedules to line up on both ends--i.e., sometimes it works great in the morning but can be a pain to coordinate for the trip home especially if it's a bus that doesn't run frequently.

Very true. But if she ends up driving to work (which might not be so bad from Belmont/Watertown), then his commute to Kendall by bus-to-T wouldn't be too bad. On nice days, it's walkable from Harvard Square (provided you like to walk), and the 71 and 73 (the main buses to and from Watertown/Belmont) run pretty frequently. I wouldn't live on any of the other bus lines, except the 77 which goes to Arlington.

My husband does the bus from Belmont to the redline in Harvard, then on to South Station and he says it not so terrible most days.  Just thought it would give them one more option to consider!  But it would really only work if the OP is willing to drive to work, because that commute would be Awwwwwful on public transport.

  • So you are moving to London and the Boston area?  Really - you didn't think we'd find this?  Hello troll!

Hmm. And she has asked this same question here before, too. I remember her financials (specifically that her H had a property willed to him and I was jealous lol).

But why would a troll want to discuss such an lame topic? Aren't trolls supposed to come on and tell us their H is cheating on them with their secretary and she wants to adopt the love child?

ETA: I meant that genuinely. I have no idea why a troll would waste their time on a post like this.

EATA: Oh. This is the post I was thinking of LOL. I have the board set to last response.
