Cracked nipple :-(

Ouch! It's not bleeding, but looks like it could start soon.

Besides Lanolin, is there anything I can do? This is the first time - other than when we both had Thrush - that it hurts to nurse! Pumping doesn't feel all that great either. :-(

A friend of mine who had nursed both her kids--and is a pharmacist--told me about a prescription called "triple nipple cream". I called the OB and asked for it about a week after DD was born b/c her latch wasn't great and I had horrible cracking/bleeding. It's really good stuff. Not cheap, but I would have paid anything for relief and def. found it with that stuff. If you don't go that route, you could give the sore breast a rest for a while till it heals and pump from it while you nurse from the good one. Good luck!

I got the Trip Nip creme when I was in the hospital. It's a steroid, so you use it very sparingly but it helped when I needed it.

Buy these, they won't help heal, but they will help soothe.

...also make sure you are cleaning with soap and warm water after every feeding. I used Dial soap.

I had the best luck with Medela Therashells and walking around half naked when I was cracked.

I'm not sure of availability for you, but I got a prescription for Newman's Nipple Cream while I was in the hospital (I sliced my right nipple with my wristband -- OUCH!) It's a specialty mix that only certain pharmacies make. It's pricey, but it's fantastic!

Oh man, the things we go through to feed our kids! I've never had so many b00b issues in my life, and really couldn't contemplate the issues pre-nursing.  I did have some bleeding/cracked nip issues a couple times, and I was always able to feel better with just lanolin.  My pharmacist friend also told me about triple nipple cream, but I didn't have to go that route. 

Anyway, hang in there, it will heal and you'll be glad you powered through!
