Stinkhorns??

I'm not sure if anyone else gets these but I'm not sure what to do about this anymore.  We had our frontyard professionally landscaped with new mulch, plants, retaining wall etc.  It looked great when it was done.  Then we started to get what looked like yellow slime patches in the mulch (fungus) - called the landscaper who said it can happen with the weather and to spray bleech on the patches.  We did and took care of that.

About 2 weeks ago I started to see these orange "horns"  coming up from the mulch.  I pulled them out and threw them away.  Today, 2 more came up.  I dug them out to find what looked like mushrooms underneath the mulch.

Is my only open to get rid of ALL of the mulch and remulch the entire bed?  I googled the horns and it said they're called stinkhorns, which look like mini penis's.

Re: Stinkhorns??

  • Getting rid of all the mulch is what we did.  We got neon orange stinkhorns in one bed.  We dug them up and poured bleach on the soil twice and it didn't do any good.  The third time we dug up all the soil and mulch, put it in garbage bags and sent it to the dump, and doused the entire area thoroughly with bleach again.  They didn't come back.

ETA - they were in about a 10" area and we removed a 4' sq area.

  • getting rid of the mulch isn't a guarantee you'll never have mushrooms.  we've never had mushrooms in our yard before.  then, this year's wetness has meant we've gotten a fresh crop every time it's rained.  we were lazy last year/this year & never got new mulch.  so, the mushroom spores blew in form somewhere else.
  • I swear they came from one type of mulch but I don't remember the brands.  I had mulched one are of our backyard with one type of mulch from Lowes and another part with a different brand.  I mulched my mom's backyard with one those brands - both that were the same had stinkhorns and the other area didn't.  We never had them in the years prior.  This year, we bought mulch from a garden shop and no stinkhorns and trust me that we have had plenty of rain to get them!
