My H's family has a reunion every other summer and next summer we'll be having it in MN. He has a pretty big family so we'd need cabins that can sleep anywhere from 4-12 people. We also want it to be on a lake for fishing and with some activities for kids. It would be ideal if they had a communal area with picnic tables and such so we can do potluck dinners. Some of the resorts I've looked at are super exensive (over $1500/week for a 2 bed) so we'd like something less expensive than that. Has anyone stayed at a resort like this in MN? We aren't set on any specific location because everyone will have to travel. Thanks!
Re: MN Family Resorts
DH and I will be staying at Gunflint Lodge next month for the first time, so I can't give a good review just yet, but it does seem to have a lot of the things that you're looking for. They offer a crowdcut coupon everyone in awhile where you can get $500 towards a stay for $250 (or about that...each one is different). Maybe that would bring the price within range for you. I think they have some cabins that room six+ people with bunkbeds for kids. They also have little kitchens and everything and lots of activities like horseback riding, kyaking, and maybe fishing.

If your family is interested in possibly going to Wisconsin, I would also suggest the Gingerbread Houses in Mountain, Wisconsin. I haven't stayed there either, but I've driven by several times and they houses are really neat looking. They're kind of...fairy house looking? All built out of stone and quirky feeling. They are also right on a lake with picnic tables and grills. Rates are around $500 a week from the website.

A place I used to work at used Cragun's Resort by Brainerd for summer conferences. They have a hotel, but they also have cabins that are 1 to 5 bedrooms, and they even have a reunion house! It is a VERY nice place and I highly recommend it.

We stayed here a few years back with DH's whole family - probably 15-17 people all in one cabin? they had smaller options as well, but it was great. You could rent boats and go fishing, for kids 4+, they had a day camp for a couple hours every day to keep them occupied, they had free kayaks, canoes, etc. Was beautiful and we loved it. Vermilion is about a 4 hr drive from cities though, kind of a ways.

I grew up going to this resor located in Hackensack/Longville (about 3 hours from the metro) on Woman Lake.

The owners are family friends of ours. It's a small resort (7cabins) family owned and operated. They do book out in advance so book ahead if possible! They are the nicest family...rentals of cabins include use of fishing boats, kayaks, canoes they also have an area in the center of all the cabins that has a fire ring and some picnic tables. They have nightly fires. Rates are 1020/week. Cabins have 3 bedrooms and 1 bath. My favorite memories of summer growing up all have to do with this resort. Good luck! I hope you find some cabins that will work for you.
