Quilt backing dilemma -- help!

I made a top that is 43.5"x43.5" from a moda bakeshop tutorial. The tutorial said I would need 1.25 yards backing. Well, turns out my backing is only 42.5" wide!! I am an inch short! The backing is flannel and about 57" long (I bought extra) -- what is the best way to partition it? Since it is a baby quilt, I really wanted to avoid a seam on the back side, and I can't trim the top, because it has an intricately pieced border......

What do I do?? Help!

  • Can you add a row that matches the front?  That way the seam seems deliberate instead of having too narrow backing fabric.

  • Could you add a border around the backing?  Maybe use the same fabric you'll bind it with?
  • For adding a border, since my backing is flannels, should the border be flannel as well? And what should the seam allowances be on flannel?

  • I would go buy a bigger piece of flannel. And use the other piece to make one of the girls PJ pants or a pillow case. The backing being pieced would drive me insane for all of time. LOL That's just me thou. :)

I would probably do this as well. But just know, the flannel is probably not "meant" for pajamas since it's not flame resistant, but they make great lounge pants.

  • If you do decide to piece the backing, use flannel. the flannel will shrink more than the cotton fabric you used on the top. even if you go buy a bigger piece for the back, you should probably shrink it before quilting (get it wet, run it through the dryer, repeat once or twice)
