Relocating to Lexington from knoxville TN

Hubs just took a new job in Lexington, and we are moving in 6 weeks!  I grew up in Knoxville and know NOTHING about the lexington area.  Any advice on the town?  What areas are clean and reasonably  priced to rent?  Also I am in the medical field and need to know where to look for a job. Very excited to move it seems like a neat city. Please help!

Re: Relocating to Lexington from knoxville TN

  • This board is usually dead!  Welcome to Kentucky (well, in a few weeks)!

Lexington is a very nice area. The Hamburg area has nice townhomes for rent and it is really close to one of the major shopping areas.  Hamburg is also close to a lot of places (and right off the interstate).  There are a lot of other nice places off of Tates Creek road, it is a great area located centrally to everything in Lexington.  I lived in a townhome off of Man O'War/Nicholasville Road area it was great and a really nice townhome for the price.

UK hospital has a number of job openings you can check them out here. You can also check out VA hospital, those openings are on usajobs.gov.

Feel free to PM if you have any other questions!!

  • We own our home, but in the same area as PP and love it.  Hamburg is a nice area, but is a pain during the Christmas season (although we're not far from the mall and traffic is really no better).

UK hospital, Central Baptist, and St. Joseph's are the major hospitals.  There's also smaller clinics like The Lexington Clinics that are more specialized.

  • Welcome!

I can't give any advice on where to live because I just don't know, but I can say that there are a lot of medical offices and hospitals in this area.

  • My advice: Leave any and all orange colored apparel/accessories in Knoxville.

  • The PP's gave good advice.  There are several hospitals in the area and doctor's offices everywhere.  I've been looking for a job, not necessarily in the medical field, but have found Indeed.com and Craig's List to be helpful.  I also suggest checking the hospitals' websites (UK, St. Joseph, Central Baptist, Shriners, etc.) since they're constantly adding more positions.

    Welcome to Kentucky!

  • Welcome to Lexington! My husband and I are actually originally from Knoxville too! We have lived in Lexington for a little over 3 years now. It is a very clean, safe and nice place to live. When we first moved here we rented a house through a realty company for a year. Alot of the realtors do that around here so you could keep that in mind in addition to apartments or townhomes. The Hamburg area is nice but as others have said can have alot of traffic- it is the Lexington equivalent to Turkey Creek in Knoxville :) We live just off of Nicholasville Rd very close to the mall and love our location, just minutes from anything you could want to go to. The downtown area is pretty nice with several fun bars to go to if you're into that sort of thing. I am in the medical field also and work for Lexington Clinic, I will say they are an excellent company to work for. If you have any other questions just let me know, I'd be glad to answer them! :)

  • Thanks for the advice! We found a place in Georgetown that we like online...any thoughts??
  • I am from Georgetown! It's a great place, it has a small town feel but has easy accessability to Lexington. It's only a 30 minute drive to the far side of Lexington (Nicholasville Road), and it has decent dinning and shopping options.  There aren't very many apartment complexes in Georgetown, but there are a number of nice homes that I have seen up for rent.

  • I go to school in Georgetown. It's a cute town and it's pretty easy to get to the amenities of Lexington.

Will you have a chance to see the place in person? Sometimes it's hard to really get a feel for a place from pictures.
