  • I'm curious, if you don't mind sharing, what the connection between the coffee, chocolate, and tomatoes and bladder issues is?

  • I dont think I could give up my 3 favorite food items permanently but I do think I could just save them for special occasions. Peeing all the time doesnt sound like fun, especially if it is impacting your daily routine.
  • The feeling of constantly having to pee is one of the things I hate most in this world.  Enough to give up chocolate and coffee.... and that's a whole freaking lot.

  • interstitial cystitis

Yet another dr has poked me, caused and pain and said I was misdiagnosed previously. This dr happened to see me on Saturday because my dr was running late due to the storm. The dr who poked me said I clearly had interstital cystitis and should do this diet. He gave me some printouts from the 70s (no joke) and said see him in a month. I'm giving it a try because if it really helps at least I'd know what the problem is. If it doesn't help I'll be thrilled actually! I have some bladder pain, ridiculously frequent peeing (even my pregnant friends can't believe how often I have to go), some pain with sex (although that has greatly improved pre-diet). But I love coffee, I drink it like fine wine-I can tell you the undernote flavors, etc. I also love chocolate and eat tomatoes with almost everything. There's a whole list of delicoius things you can't have (most fruits!). Basically anything high in vitamen C, coffee, chocolate, alchohol and high acid foods.

He also asked how many calories I eat and I said I do weight watchers. His response? "well obviously not very well."

  • hmmm well that sucks.

I think maybe I'd try the diet or at least cut back on the culprit foods. I'm not good at following diets or "programs" so I don't think I'd ever be able to completely cut out foods I loved unless they really made me sick.

THank you! The dr was at least in his 70s or 80s. He asked DH if I was irritable and said that's a sign. DH loved him and said he seemed so knowledgeable. He might know his stuff but he had a funny way of sharing it.

He might have known his stuff in the 70's when that literature was printed, but I wouldn't give a crap because there's no way I would ever see him again.

A medical degree does not give him the right to be a jerk.

Obviously you aren't too irritable or you would have punched him square in the face!

  • Um, I'd be irritable if I had those symptoms, so I don't see the relevancy... and what a jerk thing to say about your diet. I would not be going back.

When I was a teen at my annual appt., my pediatrician had retired and there was a new lady who told me I was "overweight for my height" and wanted to know if I "knew what the 5 food groups are" as she pulled out an illustration to instruct me. I want to say I was 14 or 15 years old. I wanted to punch her, too. I was barely borderline overweight, according to the BMI charts, and a competitive swimmer.

I can't believe doctors think a condescending/sarcastic tone like that will get them anywhere.

I wouldn't count on this as an option.  I have a lot of foods that make me sick & indulging in them occassionally makes me far sicker than if I just continue to eat small amounts of them.  I quit eating gluten in November & now a sip of beer makes me deathly ill for days.

Ditto. I definitely wouldn't go back.

I might try the diet to see if it helps, but I REALLY REALLY love tomatoes and would have a super hard time giving them up. So to answer your original question I would probably cut back on the offending foods if it helped, but I would have a very hard time giving them up completely.
