5 yo Go Diego Go Birthday Party

Hello Ladies,

I am having a Diego themed birthday party for my DS's 5th birthday party. I am trying to figure out a menu. My son is a very picky eater, and I am trying to find foods he will enjoy. As well as be a crowd pleaser for aprox. 20 2-5 yo's and their parents. He doesn't really like pizza, but will sometimes eat cheese pizza. He LOVES mac & cheese. But I don't know if I really want to serve that at a birthday party. I want to have a buffet style lunch. And I kind of want  to find "jungle safari themed" food. I looked at the Nick Jr. website because they had a few ideas, but nothing jumped out at me. Any ideas?

Re: 5 yo Go Diego Go Birthday Party

  • Make what your family and friends will enjoy.  You could easily make mac and cheese a side to other stuff- pulled pork, mac and cheese, broccoli slaw, baked beans.  Mac and cheese even goes with pizza, add a salad and call it a day.  If you want something jungle themed, make up names to call the food.
  • If the birthday boy loves mac and cheese - serve mac and cheese (= you can also serve hot dogs...another kid friendly food, dinosaur chicken nuggets.

  • I'm still having a panic attack at the mere thought of having 20 2-5 year olds at one party.  You are a brave, brave woman!!!   I hope your kid appreciates you!

I agree with the mac and cheese with hot dogs and/or dinosaur chicken nuggets.  Maybe have a more "adult" dish for the grown-ups in attendance, like brats or grilled chicken salad.

  • Maybe you should only make the dessert Diego themed? I think that is going to be a tough task to pull off for that many children. There is no harm in having pizza, even if your kid doesn't like it. Make some things that he will enjoy - it's his party.
  • Hi!  My kids LOVE Dora and Diego by the way...

I agree with the PP re: mac-n-cheese for your son since that is what he likes and really who doesn't like mac-n-cheese?  Do you have a slow cooker or crock pot?  I made a great mac-n-cheese for a crowd in it last Jan. - but it scorched and I have bad memories of cleaning it.  I'm sure you can find a better recipe and it would be easy to make in advance.  Or maybe a make ahead mac-n-cheese casserole.

Cheese Pizza is also great for the other kids - can even have it delivered and make it easy on yourself.

Since Diego is an Animal Rescuer and his "Rescue Pack" is mission critical to his operation - would perhaps make a  "Rescue Pack" of snacks or favors somehow.  Maybe trail mix, chewing gum, glow sticks, etc. could go in them. And of course you have to have a Pinata (that is mentioned in the books as well).

For the adults... I'm going out on a limb here but since Diego and Alicia (his sister who operates the command center) are from South American - perhaps a nod to this in your menu.  I do have a really good Slow Cooker Carnitas recipe that also feeds a crowd and can be made ahead.

Desserts inc. Bananas, Chocolate and Rice Pudding are also mentioned in the Dora books (Dora is Diego's cousin).

HTH and please post pictures and follow-up info.  I live for reading that.

    Good Luck!

  • What about a "toucan taco" bar? Have a crock pot of taco seasoned ground beef, and then all of the fixings? Even if you just do this for the adults....or make your own nachos.

or, other jungle foods - banana/monkey bread, gummy worms, diego dogs (hot dogs), tropical fruit salad (mango, papaya, guava, star fruit), pineapple juice and tropical punch...

another cute thing i saw - jungle animal face painting, and a "reptile" petting zoo

  • Thank you for all the good ideas. I will definitely post pics of the party after :)

  • fruit kabobs
safari chex mix: banana chips, green/yellow/brown M&Ms, chex, pretzels, coconut
wild zebra sandwich: 1 slice pumpernickel and 1 slice white and cut into strips and display alternatiing strips
PB&banana sandwiches cut into animal shapes
"animal snacks" - bananas for the monkeys, peanuts for the elephants, broccoli trees and ranch for the giraffes, cheetos like a lion tail, etc.

    super cute ideas!

  • If you really want to stay in theme, you could make the food as a landscape...

Chicken nuggets piled high like a mountain/volcano with ketchup down the side, macaroni and cheese as a lava pit below the chicken nuggets. you could have pigs in a blanket or hot dogs as a "snake pit".

Maybe too crazy haha. I'm not sure exactly what you're going for, so I'm just throwing the idea out there!
