Question about changing my name

Do I need to get my Drivers license changed before getting SS card? What should I get done first. I want to try to get this done tomorrow. TIA!!!

Re: Question about changing my name

  • If I remember right you can do it in any order, but I think I did SS first then DOL.

Here's the King County Link with contact info that you might find helpful:

    http://www.kingcounty.gov/courts/marriage/Namechanges.aspx

  • Social security first!! They will NOT accept any sort of temporary license and when you do your new name on your license, they usually give you a paper copy and a hole punch in your license until your new one comes in the mail. SS will NOT accept that as legal.

  • I'm pretty sure i did it the other way around.. yikes. but it's been a while.

It would be the safest route to go with SS first, because of that reason.  Some SS workers might not care, but you never know when you'll end up with the one who follows the rules to the letter.

The SS office I went to (near Uwajimaya) had at least THREE signs posted and I was very glad I had my passport with me as the guy at my window as adamant.

The SS office I went to was on Aurora, and the woman who helped me said it didn't matter if you went to the SS or DOL first.  I didn't see any signs about current ID's being required.  But the security dude standing right past the front door freaked me out a little.  I think each SS must be a little different.

That's not a legal document. If you're going to bring a copy of your birth certificate it has to be an official copy (the one with the raised seal.)

The foot print one technically doesn't prove anything.
