Bulb Planting 101 Questions

Hi All, we recently bought a new home and went from no back yard to a 1/3 acre backyard.  I am beyond excited to plant bulbs next month.  We have a lot of mulch beds bordering our entire yard that I would like to plant bulbs in. The beds are lined with the material to prevent weeds from growing.  Can I just puncture the material in the spots that I want to plant the bulbs in or do I need to remove the entire sheet?  If I just cut openings for the bulbs, will the plant find its way through a slit in the material or should I cut out a hole for each bulb?  Thanks and sorry if this question is super lame!
