AW: Three down, eleven to go!

Somehow I collected an obnoxious amount of second hand chairs this summer. I have another set of dining, an arm chair, a rocker, and a lonely only still in the works.

I could not pass up these three. They were pretty beat up, but they were FREE. $10 in fabric and $20 in paint = housewarming gift for my friend!

    Ditto!

  • Very cool! I love the black! If it wouldn't be overboard, I'd totally paint everything black and distress it.

But ugh...you should see my garage right now. One very large desk that needs repaired in addition to refinished, four doors (I have plans for two of them, one a headboard, the other a potting bench), one large rocking chair, a trunk, six chairs to glue, an antique high chair (an old metal one, needs paint on parts of it and new fabric, a buffet, oh, and a stepstool I built that needs to be painted and gifted to my mom. It's insane.

  • What do you use to paint with? A sponge brush and bristle brush? We have a chair that DH has had forever and he was going to throw it away because one of the arms broke off. I told him that we could take the other arm of and rehab the chair. This would be my first project like this and I would like to get it done the right way...Thanks!

  • I love the chairs! That is an awesome gift. I would have never thought to paint chairs.

I used spray paint. The key is prepping the surface by sanding and priming before painting and doing thin coats of paint (if you put it on too thickly it will run and/or look splotchy). These babies really sucked up the paint, too. I think it took 4 cans.

If you're making a chair go armless, you'll probably need to smooth out the spots where the arms were attached by sanding or fill them with wood filler.

This could be your "thing". You'd be the lady with all the black furniture. Chairs, end table, cabinetry: all black. Nursery? Black. lol. This is totally incongruous with your personality!
