Do chives/green onions really ruin the soil?

I have no deck, yard, or patio so my little bitty herb garden is my pride and joy.

Someone told me chives and green onions ruin the soil for other plants. Is this true? Should I replant my chives? My planter currently consists of sage, basil, dill, and chives. First time I've kept anything alive so I don't want to mess it up!

  • Check out companion planting for green onions.  It should tell you what to plant with it and what to avoid planting next to it.
  • i have never heard this.  especially if you're planting with other herbs.
  • I don't know about ruining the soil, but my husband planted a nice little row of chives in our garden 4 years ago.  They have spread, and I'm having a hard time getting rid of them.  Anyone reading this, plant your chives in a container.

  • I don't think thats true, BUT, I would put them in their own bigger pot anyway so they can grow bigger year to year. I've had mine for 10 years and it does great! I put it in the end of my garden bead and its gotten along well with everything else.

  • I don't think this is true. I have mixed chives with other herbs and they do well - except the chives!  The only chives that I've planted that do really, really well are not in containers and directly in the ground.

If your planter is the evidence, I'd say it's not true.

  • I have heard of chives and mint crowding out other plants because they like to spread.  One part of my lawn smells like spearment every time I mow it.
