Aggie Question: Ring Day

My niece will get her Aggie ring this coming Friday. DH bought it for her as his class ring (Texas Tech) means a lot to him.  She has asked us to be there along with my sister.

I am unclear if this is a ceremony or an appointment to pick up the ring somewhere on campus?

Re: Aggie Question: Ring Day

  • It's kind of a party/time to pick up the ring... not really a ceremony (or at least it wasn't when I got mine 10 years ago).  She might want to dunk it and that part you'll want to be there for. ;)
  • I'm glad you asked because my brother is getting his soon also and invited us to participate and I am not too sure what to do or how to make it special for him.

  • When XH got his in 07 we just went and picked up his ring and took a few pictures and then he dunked it later that evening. The dunking is more of the party - picking it up isn't done in a ceremony or anything we just walked in and got it and left.

She is having a party the next night after the game to dunk @ midnight...with 50 of her closest friends :)

Since we are old people and not college cool, we are not planning to stick around for the dunk as this is also our wedding anniversary.   She was just happy we were coming when she gets her ring.  I wasn't sure what to expect and my sister wasn't sure either.  Thanks!

This helps.  We are doing a family dinner party after she picks up her ring I was just unclear how big of a deal getting the ring was...I think she is trying to get a time this morning to pick it up.

The way Fay words it, it sounds like it was no big deal at all for her XH.  Picking up my ring was a huge deal for me.  My friends & I stayed at the Association building partying for several hours.  I can't remember all the details now, but I know there was live music & free food.

I can see how it would sound like it was no big deal and I guess I should have worded it differently as it was a very big deal as it is for all Aggies. I just didn't want her to expect a formal sit down ceremony or anything.

  • when i got mine, they would give you a number (i was class of 97 and got number 97, so i was really excited), and you had to line up in number order, and you went in to pick up your ring.  there were lots of festivities, and it would have been very meaningful to me if i'd had some family there!  my roommate was there, and took a few pics... but so many people's families show up and make it a huge deal.  it would have been cool to have had that.

they set up around the former students building like a carnival, and there are festivities galore.

some families hang out for the dunking, but that would not have been a family thing for me (more a friends thing).

it's a huge deal.  probably second only to graduation (and quite frankly, ring day was more fun for me than graduation).

  • Thanks again for all the details ladies :)

    I would agree with this.

Picking up the ring is definitely more family friendly, whereas dunking is basically the start of a very drunk night.

I never actually dunked my ring, as I am not & never have been a beer drinker.

    Exciting times for sure!

  • I'm also class of 97. Sadly, I don't remember much about getting mine. I went with my roommate and some friends, but that is all I remember. I guess that night messed with my memory of the day.  Big Smile

  • I didn't get mine on "ring day."  Now I can't even remember why...

I just went in and picked it up.  But yes, it is a big deal!
