i've got a "wwyd" for ya:

the hub's great-grandma passed on a couple of weeks ago and i was happy to accept a stack of beautifully embroidered vintage handkerchiefs from her vast stash of...stuff.  i can't imagine actually blowing my nose into them or using them to wipe chocolate off of the bean's face or anything like that, but am stumped as to what else i could do.

i thought of maybe a pillow or a quilt, but our house doesn't really lend itself to that kind of decor.  they're white with border and corner embroidery in designs like butterflies, hearts, flowers...you get the picture.  i think it would be fun to make something out of them, but don't know what.

any ideas, crafty ladies?

  • My mom worked one into all the great grand babies quilts. On the boys quilts she put them on the back. She worked some lace ones into dresses and hats as well.

  • you could frame them and do decorative hangings in your living rooms or in the kids' bedrooms

I like this idea, only I think I would frame them and give them to people who knew her and would love to have something to remember her by.

  • Do you forsee many babies in your family's future? There are ways to turn vintage hankies into a bonnet but in a way that enables it to be turned back into a hankie for a wedding.

I know I saw a pattern for a little girl's dress that used vintage handkerchiefs but I'm not sure where. I'll look and see what I can come up with.

  • I started collecting vintage hankies a few years ago with the intention of making a quilt.  I got overwhelmed with that idea but ended up using several of them in my daughter's room as a banner.  I basically took twine, ironed the hankies in halves and flipped them over it and hung it.  I think it's pretty cute but what I really like is that it didn't alter the hankies at all so if I change my mind later and want them for another project they are still in one piece.

I like the framing idea but if your hankies are like mine they are all different sizes, that makes it challenging.

We received one of these as a gift for DS; he wore it for his baptism. It was really sweet.

I know you said you don't want to blow your nose into them, but have you ever tried using handkerchiefs? OMG, they are soooo much nicer than tissues. I made a double sided hankie holder for my purse. One side holds the clean ones and one side is for dirties. I have some that I've been using for a couple years, and they show no staining, the embroidery still looks great.
