OPK Strips

For the past 2 months I haven't been able to get a + on these things, but today I started keeping them and labeling what days I took them, yesterday and today's initially read as neg, but after they sat and dried up they show 2 lines. Is this normal & I've never noticed, or is this a +?

Tia.

Re: OPK Strips

  • I wouldn't use the old ones as a guide.  Maybe take a picture instead.  I had a hard time reading them at first.  I splurged and got some cheap Smile one on amazon.  When I got the Smile, then I'd test on either the strips or the $ store variety to tell what they should look like.  For me the line starts to get darker right before O, so I usually get 2 days of really dark lines and then they lighten again after O.  I also use the CBEFM on top of OPKs.  It seems like I POAS everyday.

  • i wouldn't count that as a positive.

you can keep track of them and temp on fertilityfriend.com. watching your temperature is a helpful and will help you have an idea of when you are/aren't ovulating and when using an OPK is worth it.

  • I have the CBEFM and it somehow confuses the hell out of me. I used it for 4 months, never got a smiley, and gave up.

I got the Wondfo strips from Amazon. I just took another, not diluted, let it sit for 20 mins and there is 2 lines. Granted the first one is really light.

Hmh, maybe tomorrow will be darker. I was just excited to see SOMETHING.

I've been temping and using an app on my phone to keep track. FF is not easily accessible on my phone, and I rarely use the computer.

My temp spikes right before AF, like one day before. Then goes down the day after. So Idk what that means, I've had pretty wonky cycles, but I'm exited to just have AF.

  • Not sure if you're just looking at any two lines.  But just FYI that for OPK to be positive, the test line has to be DARKER than the control line.  Two lines does not mean it's a positive like a pregnancy stick.

  • I have really long cycles and have trouble Oing, I do eventually but it takes my body a long time.  I never could get clear positives on the OPKs, apparently my hormones are low and the spike that the OPK is supposed to pick up is so short for me that I needed to do OPKs 2 or 3 times a day to catch it.

I had more luck charting temps and monitoring my CM.

My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.
  • Are you testing more than once a day? I had to test 2-3 times a day to catch it. I had a pretty short surge. I also have slightly screwy cycles.

It also has to be darker than the control line. Such a pain.

I found charting to be a lot more useful for me (CM wasn't helpful either, ugh.)  I had a pretty good pattern I could recognize leading up to O.

I agree with this.  I have to test at least twice too.  I've missed surges before.  My new RE said to test around 3pm...something about surges happens later in the day.  It could be that you aren't ovulating though.  Are you seeing an O pattern in your charts?

Don't look at your strips longer than the recommended time or use that as a positive or negative.

I use CBE digitals (which will give you a O or a Big Smile) and the CBEFM (which give me low, high, and peak reading).  I save those and write what day I'm on and look at the lines to see the progression so I can tell when it is getting close to time.

    Good luck!!!

  • I will start testing a few times per day. I've currently been doing it once a day for two weeks from CD 8. Havent seen a surge yet.

Ive been temping but dont see the spike in temp until right before my period.

I dont think I'm Oing.  At what point did you seek help?

I started going to a RE because I needed surgery on my uterus for large fibroids and an abnormal shaped uterus.  Now it's because I'm having trouble.

Typically your temp spikes when you O and drops right before your period.  Plus the fact that you've gone through 2 months with no +OPK, I wouldn't wait too long to call your OB/Gyn to get their advice and referral for a RE.

  • I'd want about 3 months of charts to prove a pattern before going to the doctor.

Do you have normal length cycles?

For me, I always ovulated around CD21.

  • Thanks for the help Ala!

My cycles are off the wall. I had a 42 day cycle one month, then the next month I had 8 days. Then 2 "normal" 30 day cycles.

I did go to a OBGYN for my yearly and casually asked about what I should do to get tested, like for hormones because my cycles are crazy. She shut me down and told me I cannot have children until I lose weight..

Now I'm nervous to even find another Dr & bring this up because they cannot see past me being overweight...which I am convinced is part of a hormone imbalance.

    I talk to much...

  • Have you recently stopped hormonal birth control? (pill, ring, etc.)

It took me a few months to really regulate, about 4 cycles. My OB/GYN said it could take up to 6 months to regulate after getting off the pill.  I would ovulate one cycle and then an anovulatory cycle for the next.  The lengths would vary from 24 to 32 days.  Now, my cycles are 30 days and I ovulate close to day 19. My OB/GYN told be to come back in 6 months, from the time I regulated, if I was not PG.  I will be 35 in December.  I see Dr. Bobo.  She comes highly recommended on this board.

  • What practice is Dr Bobo with?

I stopped BC 2 years ago, my cycles havent been "normal" since.

  • Dr. Bobo is part of The Women's Specialists of Houston.  I also have friends that use Dr. Zepeda and Dr. Espana in the practice.

If it hasn't regulated in 2 years, I would make an appointment to see another doctor.  Have you been screened for PCOS?

    Lilypie Angel and Memorial tickers
  • BC made my AF stop completely, that is why I stopped. They did an ultrasound for PCOS but that came back clear. No other testing has been done.

Thanks for the Rec, I will give them a call & schedule an appt with Dr Bobo.

  • The first thing she did was draw a PCOS blood panel.  I don't have it.  We are going to see an RE at the end of the month.

  • Was the blood panal testing hormone levels as well?

I hope your time with the RE is short & you get KTFU. :-)

  • imagewarontv:

I don't really understand your question.  The PCOS test is a hormone test.  This is a really simple explanation of what the test shows (Not the best source in the world, but it ties to the paperwork my doctor gave me).

Yes.  It tested hormone levels, plus some glucose levels.  Good luck!

  • Honestly, I think you need another doctor.  I have PCOS and while many women with it do have cysts just as many don't so an ultrasound really doesn't mean squat.  It is the hormones that matter.  Second, while getting PG while overweight is not necessarily ideal (I did it and many others have done it too) unless you are so morbidly obese that a pregnancy would kill you or something so serious, if you want to get PG then that is your perogative.  It is not your drs place to tell you when you can try having kids - she may offer advice - but to shut you down completely is just wrong.  Also, some women may lose weight when they start treatment for PCOS.

Thank you Bin for your kind words. Ive been feeling very self concious ever since that Dr said that, and am afraid of even asking for help because I dont want another Dr to say that.

I'm not to terribly heavy, maybe 80-100 lbs over weight. In every other aspect I'm incredibly healthy. I do not eat horribly and have doing weight watchers, and I continue to stay the same weight.

Have you also been to the Womens Specialists center? Do do have another Dr to rec?

  • I have PCOS and I've been overweight for like..ever. And I (obviously) have two kids. Ideal to be overweight and trying to get pregnant? No. But for your doctor to shut you down is nonsense.

If you want to chat you can email me at kimmer12378 @ gmail

  • I'm about 50 lbs over my ideal weight.  My OB/GYN has never said anything about my weight, nor has my family physician.  My endocrinologist is the only one that has said I should loose weight and that is because my dad has type II diabetes.

I believe Kimmer sees Dr. Gogola, along with a couple other nesties who love him.
