poll: charitable donations

We need a discussion to liven up the board! I'm currently trying to plan my contributions for the rest of the year, so let's talk about charities.

What are your favorite charities to support?

Do you give time, money, or both?

Do you have a contribution goal you try to meet each year or do you just give as you feel like it? If you have a goal, do you aim for a specific dollar amount or for a percentage of your income (or hours volunteered)?

Additional comments?

We need a discussion to liven up the board! I'm currently trying to plan my contributions for the rest of the year, so let's talk about charities.

What are your favorite charities to support?

My favorite charity is Easter Seals (particularly my hometown one) followed by the Christopher Reeve Foundation to Cure Paralysis.

Do you give time, money, or both?  Both, but more money than time

Do you have a contribution goal you try to meet each year or do you just give as you feel like it? If you have a goal, do you aim for a specific dollar amount or for a percentage of your income (or hours volunteered)?

We don't have a specific goal in mind. They just have several events throughout the year that they collect for and we tend to give the middle "level" amount at each event. So, if they say, "We'd love donations of $10 for bronze club, $100 for silver club, or $1000 for gold club!" we tend to give the $100. We also tend to donate randomly to other events as friends run in marathons, collect for their favorite charities, etc.

Additional comments? The one charity I refuse to help is the United Way Campaign through work. They're just so damn pushy!

  • What are your favorite charities to support? Primarily I give to the local food bank and DonorsChoose.org, but I also give to the Alzheimer's Association and a local low cost spay-neuter clinic.

Do you give time, money, or both? Money. I always say I intend to volunteer, but somehow I never get around to looking for opportunities or actually committing.

Do you have a contribution goal you try to meet each year or do you just give as you feel like it? If you have a goal, do you aim for a specific dollar amount or for a percentage of your income (or hours volunteered)? This is the first year I've set a goal, now that H and I both have steady jobs and debts paid off.  I'm tentatively aiming for 5% of my take-home pay, but I'm only on track to give 2-3% this year. I either need to increase the amounts I'm giving or revise my goal.

Additional comments?  I've been trying to donate throughout the year rather than all at once at the end of the year, and it's really helped my budget to spread it out. When I feel like spending money but don't actually need anything, I go "shopping" for projects on DonorsChoose.

  • What are your favorite charities to support? American Red Cross, Susan G Komen, local women's shelterDo you give time, money, or both? Due to my lack of time, I give donations quite often.Do you have a contribution goal you try to meet each year or do you just give as you feel like it? If you have a goal, do you aim for a specific dollar amount or for a percentage of your income (or hours volunteered)? I don't give a specific amount. When there is a crisis such as a natural disaster, I have a tendency to give more to ARC!

  • What are your favorite charities to support? Currently it's City Rescue Mission & the food bank.

Do you give time, money, or both? Money.  I want to give time but I haven't.

Do you have a contribution goal you try to meet each year or do you just give as you feel like it? If you have a goal, do you aim for a specific dollar amount or for a percentage of your income (or hours volunteered)? We're a strict 10% of our gross income to the church (they reach out and use the money for certain things I like--digital distribution of the Bible, local service missions, international missions, Haiti, etc).  If we have extra at the end of the month we usually put any extra toward another cause--Food bank, March of Dimes, etc.
