How many u/s?

So, I was talking to my husband about our cousin who is expecting and were discussing the "normal" amount of ultrasounds. What is the norm? 1 at around 12 weeks and 1 at around 20? I'm clueless since I had 3 before I was 10 weeks and one once a month up until 7 months and then one almost every two weeks! I think next time around I'll be disappointed if I don't see the little one a lot (although I was big against lots of u/s in the beginning :))

Re: How many u/s?

  • Yes, my doctor offers one around 12 week that is optional (NT Scan testing for Down's Syndrom risk) and the anatomy scan one is done around 19 or 20 weeks. With Eli I ended up having one when I was overdue as well.

  • I had one at 6 weeks (because I didn't know how far along I was...well actually I did, but I lied so that I could get the u/s and see my baby Devil )

Then I had one at I think 8 weeks to do the optional first tri screening. Then the next one was 12 weeks for the tests that they required us to do for Downs Syndrom and whatever else. the next one was 20 weeks for anatomy screening. That was the last one, unless there is an issue or they think the baby is positioned weirdly or something and need to see him.

  • One at 20 weeks and then I went over my due date and they did one and found out that Abe was a porker.
  • We did a dating one at 6 weeks-ish (I pretty much knew when I'd conceived but they did it regardless) and then 19 weeks for the biggie.  I think in my practice that's the standard protocol if everything looks good.
  • I've had 6 or 7 so far! but I was followed by the high-risk clinic (so 3 more than I would have maybe?). I had one at 8 weeks which is standard for my practice, the NT scan at 12 weeks, the anatomy scan at 18 weeks. I had another u/s at 10 weeks because they couldn't find the heartbeat on the doppler... but that wasn't routine.

  • OP your timeline sounds right.  We had one at about 8 weeks to date, an optional (who wouldn't want to see baby?) at 19 weeks for anatomy and gender.  At the 37 week appointment my doctor brought a small portable one in just to see if he was head first, we didn't get to see much, but it was good to know that he wasn't breach.

  • I had a dating u/s at 8 weeks, a quick in office one at 11 weeks due to not hearing the heartbeat (tilted uterus) and then one at 20 weeks.  So far that's it :)

  • Normal is one at around 20 weeks to check anatomy development.

Optional but not uncommon is one around 12 weeks to check nuchal translucency (high levels of fluid are correlated with Down Syndrome).

Some women also get another one early on to date the pregnancy.

If you go past your due date, you'll probably get another one to check fluid levels, etc.

So, the answer is one. Or more. Smile

With DD, I had the ultrasounds at 12 and 20 weeks. I also had a quickie check with a portable unit in the hospital at 37 weeks before they started the pitocin to make sure she was head down.

  • It really depends on insurance...most insurances cover 1 routine ultrasound which is the 20 week anatomy check.  All other ones would have to be medically necessary, but there are a lot of things that could make that happen...needing to date the pregnancy, the NT scan, other issues, and post-dates u/s.  If you had a perfectly healthy, low-risk, by-the-book pregnancy, and delivered on time, it wouldn't be surprising to only have one.    We had the 20 week one and then 1 a few days after my due date.

  • Thanks ladies. This helps :) DH didn't believe me since he only knew my case. I totaled all of my u/s up and it looks like I had 16! Next go round I'm hoping for less!
  • Wow!  I was bummed to not have seen him more, but also relieved not to have the stress of needing more.  You definitely deserve the easiest pregnancy in the world next time!!

Thank you! It was fun seeing her, but funny since I was team green! I definitely would love an easy, don't worry pregnancy next time, but I've definitely been blessed with an easy baby. I feel like if the next one is easy I'll fear for what happens once they are born :P
  • we haven't even started to TTC yet, but I saw my new OBGYN last week and she said to call as soon as I get a positive HPT and they'll have me come in for a blood test and u/s...I was kind of surprised that they would do one so early, but I guess it would be for confirming conception date

  • I had a ton too Meg, I don't think I could even count them all... I would have to go back to a calendar to look them all up!
