Kindle

I am planning on getting James a Kindle for his birthday in November.  Amazon has two:  $139 and $114 which includes special offers.  I don't get it.  So the cheaper one has like commercials on it or something?

TTC #2 for a million years: SA normal, CD 23 bloodwork shows nothing amiss, ovulation detected. Next step: ? maybe CD3 bloodwork to check eggs? All out of pocket, so limited IF tests/treatments.

Re: Kindle

  • Basically - Receive special offers and sponsored screensavers that display on the Kindle screensaver and on the bottom of the home screen?they don't interrupt reading.

    I would find it annoying.

  • i would definitely pay a few more dollars to get ad-free.

  • I am an avid Kindle reader and I LOVE my Kindle. As PP said the difference is the adds, but I have read on Kindle enthusiast blogs that the adds don't bother them. You just see an ad when you turn your kindle on to go read and that's it. Amazon has also had some really good special offers through some of the kindle adds for books and discounts, which I have been jealous of since I have the previous kindle version and don't get adds. If I were to buy a new kindle now I would get the one with ads that include wireless and 3G.

  • I bought the $114 one a couple months ago and love it. I have gotten several books free or for $1.00 because of a special offer from my kindle. The ads only are there when you turn it on and that is it. They don't pop up any time at all.

Me too! Me too! I have a nook color and LOVE it :)

  • Another difference is the cheaper one only has wifi whereas the more expensive one has 3G and wifi.

  • I have a NookColor and LOVE it - so I can't speak about the Kindle. But I'd go for ad-free. That's just silly.

I was given the regular wi-fi Kindle for my birthday last December, but if the Kindle with special offers option had been available, I would have wanted that. Save $25 and get special deals? Yes, please! I don't understand why people would not want that. The screensavers on the regular Kindle are not customizable, and some are downright creepy. I see no reason not to go the special offers route.

Also, the 3G version is nice, but 3G access is unnecessary for most people. I would not spend the extra $50 there. And finally, Nook Color is nice, but is not an e-reader in the truest sense. It's good for someone who also wants to read websites, but most people I know got their Nooks/Kindles purely as book readers. The color version strains the eyes just as much as a computer screen, so it's not the best option for people who plan to read it for hours.
