What to use for freezing (not plastic)?

I saw the Ziploc bag post below but my question is about freezing. I currently use Ziploc bags (just the regular gallon sized ones) for freezing foods like meat, dough and fruit. I don't normally freeze anything longer than a month.

Is there a better alternative to plastic? Would I be using less plastic if I used plastic wrap?

Occasionally I'll freeze meat in it's original packaging but that doesn't help me when we buy in bulk.

Thanks!

  • Freezer paper/butcher paper should work for your meat.  For everything else you can use glass.  When i make cookie dough i put it in a glass container then press parchment against the top and freeze it.  It saves quite well this way.

  • For short-term freezing (leftover soup for example), we use glass Pyrex bowls.  They work great, and stack nicely.

For long-term (6+ months) freezing, we have a Food Saver, which uses special plastic bags.  We freeze a ton of food to last all winter, so using glass containers isn't feasible because of their price and how much space they take up in the freezer.  The Food Saver bags are BPA free.  After a bunch of research, we decided the limited plastic use was still much greener than buying frozen food from the store that had to be kept cold it's whole life cycle since its creation in China or wherever.

  • I use freezer paper for meat. It's lined with plastic, but I think it's better than baggies.
