Tell me about River Birch trees
Does anyone have them? What do you know about them? My DH and I are going to plant some trees and like birch. A suggestion was to go with River Birch trees. We like them for the filtered light. What type of soil do they prefer? How have yours done, if you've planted them? What type of maintence on them? Etc...
TIA
Anyone can be cool, but awesome takes practice!
Re: Tell me about River Birch trees
They're called River Birch because they like moist soil and lots of water--it naturally occurs in floodplains, bottomlands, and, of course, along rivers. It likes acidic soils.
They can get to around 70 feet tall and are best grown in the multi-trunk form. Make sure you have enough room for a tree this size, because they grow fast and obviously get big.
If you're looking for a smaller birch, European White Birch does well in your area and grows to about 40 feet.
In addition to everything PP said, they're short lived, only lasting 20-30 years (here, anyways). They also drop something all year long - twigs, leaves, seed dohickeys - so plant them somewhere their cast-offs won't bother you, like the far back of the yard.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
Betula nigra is the botanical name if you want to look in a Sunset Western Garden book or their website.
It likes average watering, gets 40' x 30', and it does best in part shade part sun.
