s/o Favorite Get Away Places (Driving Distance)

Dh and I are not very outdoorsy, but love to get away and explore new places.  I will always be a city girl/ beach bum.   Here's a few of our favorites from living in the northern half of the state:

New Buffalo, MI for the beach and restaurants.  There's a new(ish) casino too!

St. Joe, MI Silver Beach for the beach, shops, and festivals.

Saugatuck, MI for the beaches, boats, food, shopping, and just a great place to hang out.  We spent NYE there and foung out there's a fireworks show over the lake at midnight.

These are all in the middle of the Michigan Wine Trail which is a great way to spend the day!  We usually hit a couple wineries when we visit my parents in Michiana.

Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, Grand Rapids, MI- They throw an awesome NYE bash that only has one smoking area.  They have fine dining restaurants within walking distance and in the hotel.  People get all dressed up and dance the night away.  The hotel is a 1920's style hotel with great city views and service (including 3AM munchie room service on NYE)

Baypointe Inn, Gun Lake, MI- They have rooms with jacuzzis and fireplaces in them with a view of the lake, indoor pool, hot tub, and gourmet restaurant.  You can even rent pontoon boats in the summer.

From living in the southern half of the state:

Cincy- For concerts at Riverbend Stadium, Kings Island, shopping (including IKEA), and just hanging out.

Nashville, TN- We go for NHL games, fine dining (Sambuca, Prime 108, and The Palm are favorites), concerts (never been to a show where an artist did NOT have a friend show up to sing including Kid Rock dropping in at Bob Seger and Sheryl Crow and Trace Adkins doing numbers with Kid Rock at his show).  We really love to Honky Tonk though and always stay on Broadway!

Nashville, IN- Abbey Inn B&B We got the Sweetheart's Cabin after we got married there.  It has a hot tub inside, sauna, and a king size bed with a full kitchen.  There's a creek running behind it and it's right on 46 near the town and the state park.

What are some of your favorite get aways?  We're always looking for something new!

Re: s/o Favorite Get Away Places (Driving Distance)

  • We like to go to Michigan City, IN and New Buffalo, MI for the beach.

We have been to Cincy a few times to visit the Creation Museum.

H and I haven't traveled much together since we didn't start living together until after the wedding. We're hoping we have more time for hiking and other day trips

  • Cinci is a favorite.. because, well. I'm from there originally ;) So we go every other month to visit my parents.  In fact, this weekend we're going and seeing a Reds game.  I think it's also Oktoberfest this weekend.

Also love the Michigan wine trail area.  It's gorgeous up there. Especially around fall time!  Great suggestion.

We got married at a B&B also.  That Pretty Place, in Middlebury, IN(northern).  It's back in the woods, completely secluded. I love it.

All really good suggestions, thank you!!

  • Hands down, back home to Chicago.  I miss it terribly and it is a short drive and so many things to do, even for a short get away.
  • We too love Michigan! I am really excited to hear about the Amway Plaza--that sounds fabulous!

We have been to New Buffalo, Saugutuck/Douglas and last year went to Traverse City. It is almost a 4 hour drive from No IN, but worth it! There are two separate wine trails up there that are wonderful and a giant state park that is fantastic hiking. We also stayed in a historic hotel that was very nice. Probably the high point was this fabulous italian restaurant that went to--it is in a redeveloped state hospital. We were there on an October night that was foggy and very spooky! We are not into scary stuff, but this was the right combo of ambiance and fantastic food!

I miss Chicago too!   My job when we lived in the northern half of the state was at a Chicago firm and we always had meetings in the area.  I loved it.  My friend's band was playing last Superbowl Sunday and he's a Steelerss fan who was irked about the loss.  He played Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Sweet Home Chicago" in honor of the Packer's win.  That was when we met and I always tease him that he had me at "Sweet Home Chicago" that night.  My Mom grew up on the IN side of the Burbs and we still spend a lot of time in the city.
  • Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge, TN for the culture, mountains, and cabins in said mountains.

Nashville, IL to see Zach's side of the family, and it's a tiny enough town that I swear Barney Fife is walking around with his bullet in his pocket - welcome to Mayberry, Illinois style!

Pensacola, FL because it's gorgeous. Not real fond of the bridge to get out there, but it's worth it.

New Haven, CT - Zach's got a friend at Yale, and I've got a few friends not far from that. Plus, if you get on the train (and suffer through the motion sickness), you can get into New York for a bit.

*Edit - I missed the parenthesis on driving distance. I guess that gets us as far as IL. If we go on vacation, we usually make sure it's far enough from home that we'll like coming back after a week or so.
