Southern New Hampshire

Hi Ladies,

My husband and I are currently living north of Boston but are considering a move to southern New Hampshire. We need to be within 30 minutes drive from Wilmington, MA (where my husband works).  We are looking at Derry and Londonderry but if you have you any recommendations on other towns that we should consider that would be great.  We also don't know much about either of these towns so any information that you could provide would be much appreciated.

We are looking for a safe, family friendly neighborhood with a true sense of community and a good school system. We don't have kids now but are hoping to have them in the future. We are currently living in a town house and love the idea of a single family home with a yard and not right on top of our neighbors like we are now.

I really appreciate any advice you could offer.  Thanks so much!

Re: Southern New Hampshire

  • I live in Derry and I have for about 2 years now. Its not a bad place to live. For the most part I like it. We wanted to be close to Boston, but far enough away. We also like that it is equal distance to Manchester, Salem or Nashua, which all have great restaurants and shopping. I hear the schools are good, but I dont have any kids so I don't really know. The only real complaints I have are:

     1) Restaurants: there are not very many and the few they do have are terrible. There are a few chains (applebees, t-bones, 99 in londonderry you know to expect crap food there, but there is always a wait because there are so few other places around, even on a wednesday night this is likely a wait at 99)

There was one excellent local place, Pinkerton Tavern, but the town forced them to shut down because they are widening rt 28 and putting in a shopping plaza. There are rumors that they will be putting in a nice steak house there but there are also rumors "the nice steakhouse" will be a longhorn. Confused Also there is likely going to be a walmart supercenter.

    2) There is no trash pick up, you either higher an independent company or get your free dump pass and haul it to the dump. The dump is inconvient as they are open like 7-3 Tuesday-Saturday. So unless you work 2nd or 3rd shift, you will be at the dump with everyone else on Saturday.

This makes Derry sound pretty bad, which it really isn't, but these are things I wish people told me before I moved here. Came as quite the surprise that we didn't have trash pick up. It wasn't until 2 weeks after we moved in that our plumber told us that we would have to go to the dump. lol

  • I also live in Derry. Other than the taxes, I like it. It's a nice area, not too many bad places. I don't have any of the issues above poster has. I think there are a few good restaurants, but you have to look for them, and I'd love to see more come in. There's a Greek place in town that is awesome. There are also a few breakfast places that are pretty good, a greasy spoon diner Maryanne's and a cafe style place, Janie's Uncommon Cafe, technically in Londonderry. The owner of Janies did have a steakhouse in Derry, but had to close due to the economy. Going to the dump on a Saturday isn't the end of the world, although I did grow up with Saturday dump runs, so maybe that's why I don't mind. The school system is supposd to be fantastic, and that's the main reason why we chose to have a tiny house in Derry rather than a larger house in, say Manchester. Londonderry is a great area too, as are Windham, or Pelham, both towns close to 93 and the border. I'm not a fan of Salem for living though, but that could be just me.
  • Hi,

I live in Windham (between Nashua and Salem). I love this location because Nashua has great hospitals and Salem has.. well everything! They recently built a new high school in the town and I love that on Range Road there is a very nicely kept, clean park/playground with tennis courts, play area for children, walking path on the entire outside, skate park and large fields. There's also a farm stand that sells fruits/veg/flowers/ etc and homemade ice cream/yogurt. There's a long walking trail in town too (once was railroad tracks, but now it's smooth and paved). 45 minutes from Boston. My husband grew up in this town, and I am planning to raise my (hopefully soon!) children. If you move somewhere by here, I could use a walking buddy! (That goes for you ladies in Derry too!) Good luck!
