Long move away from home!

So it looks like my fiance (Hubby to be 4.7.12), FSIL, her husband, and their two kids and I are moving to Kentucky! The hubby-to-be and his BIL work together and their company is expanding and opening a new region out there!

I am graduating this December with my Bachelors in Education and was wondering how the market is for teachers (1-5)? We are looking at about 7-10 months before we move and have no idea where at yet!

I am extremely excited/nervous :)  I've only driven through Kentucky when I was young so I'm not sure what to expect, but I hear life is not as chaotic as it is here in Arizona and we won't see half as much diversity. I work in a low income school right now with 98% Hispanic soooo this might be a little wake up call for me!

Re: Long move away from home!

  • I think the first thing you will notice is the weather. Here in Kentucky we (normally) have all 4 seasons. While the humidity can be bad in the summer, It is absolutly perfect  here during Spring and Fall. I think parts of Kentucky are very laid back, and the level of diversity will certainly depend on what part of Kentucky you move to.  You can get on the Kentucky Departement of Education website and check out our school/state report card. http://www.education.ky.gov/NR/rdonlyres/99FA32B5-3AE7-4898-8D06-B2A98878644C/0/KYReportCard_200910.pdf to get more info on the types of schools you would want to work at. I live in the Lexington area, so if you have questions please don't hesitate to ask! Good luck with your move!

  • It depends on the area you're in. Lexington is overrun with teachers, but we have a growing Hispanic population, so that experience would give you a huge leg up (though I don't think Lexington has nearly 98% :)).  Other areas have shortages. I subbed for a year and hated it, but it lead to a full-time job the next school year, so that's always an option, too.

    My Bio

  • Kentucky people are the nicest people I've ever met, and I'm totally biased.  Let us know what region of the state you'll be in and we'll be able to tell you more, but you're going to see a wide variety of people everywhere you are.

  • My fiance and I moved to KY about 2 months ago from Chicago! It was/is a huge change for us. We live in South Central Kentucky, and so far we are enjoying it. Depending where you live is maybe a bigger shock then you think!

    Best of luck and congrats!
