Open House or Cookie Swap?

I'm trying to decide if I should host a cookie swap for Christmas or an open house.  The cookie swap would be females only and include family and a few close friends.  The open house would be family members and friends.  I think the open house would be more flexible in terms of fitting in to people's schedules and wouldn't require guests to bring anything.  Or I could do both an host them on separate weekends.  So... cookie exchange, open house, or both?

Re: Open House or Cookie Swap?

  • I wouldn't do both.  It's too much work and people are so busy at that time of year.  I think it depends on which group of people you'd rather catch up with.

  • Yeah, I think it just depends on which group of people you'd rather see.  Personally, I think the cookie swap sounds like more fun.
  • I also agree don't do both.  It's a lot of work to host anything in your home and that time of year it's even tougher to make the time, for both you and your guests.  I guess it depends on who you would rather spend the day with, as well as what you think would be a more successful event.  Case in point, I like the cookie swap idea, but we tried that last year & it flopped.  When the time came nobody came through for it.  So next time I decide to host a holiday gathering it would most likely be an open house.

  • Same here - depends on who you want to hang out w/ the most.  I go to a cookie swap and I love it.  It's the perfect girls night.

But then another friend has an open house, and for that group - I prefer the open house!

  • Thanks ladies!  Based on the feedback I've gotten here and on the entertaining ideas board (and doing a little googling too!), I've decided on an open house.  Any further input would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks again!

  • As someone who organizes two cookie swaps each year (one office and one family), I say do the open house!  LOL.

Seriously, a cookie swap is a lot more work than you might think, and you have to rely on a lot of people to not flake out on you.  You have to know -- for certain and in advance -- how many people will participate; you have to trust that the participants will keep to the rules (i.e. no store bought cookies, no "no-bakes," no non-holiday cookies, etc.); you have to consider whether the invitees know how to bake, and whether you would want to eat something that comes out of their kitchens (read: is the kitchen clean); you have to get everyone's recipe in advance so you can provide copies for all the participants -- that way people can make the cookies they like and, more importantly, avoid eating/feeding loved ones something to which they may be allergic.  (I make labels for everyone's cookies that correspond to the artwork in the recipe booklet I put together for each participant.)  Then you'll have the people who don't show up, and the people whose cookies are beautiful works of edible art, well-packed in cute holiday-appropriate air-tight contaners, along with the people who show up with some throw-together plain-jane cookies shoved into a ziplock bag, half mangled before the party even starts... Not exactly equitable in terms of time, labor and money spent, and it upsets some people.  And, on top of all the cookie nonsense, you still have to prepare your home for guests and feed people.

So -- enjoy your open house!  :)
