Moving to Canary Islands-bringing furniture?

We will be relocating to Gran Canarias this winter for MH's job.  I'm thrilled with the move.

We're in disagreement about what furniture we should pack in our conex to have shipped over and what we should just plan to buy when we arrive.

Anyone know about the availability of overstuffed recliner sofas in Spain or the Canaries specifically?

Alternately, if you moved furniture from the US, would you consider it to be a hassle?

I'm thrilled about the change of location, but dread the actual move.

Re: Moving to Canary Islands-bringing furniture?

  • Euro furnitue is smaller than American furniture, so it might be diffficult/incredibly expensive to get a large overstuffed recliner. We shipped furniture, but I think whether or not it's worth it depends upon how long you'll be there. We only shipped minimal furniture and chose to store the rest. For me the storage space was a giant PITA and I wish we'd never bothered--but we also have no plans to move back to the US.
  • Thanks.  We don't have much furniture that is not of the donate quality that we wouldn't take with us, so it's likely my dad's house will be my storage space.  Things like our bed which will be an upgrade to the one there, and my bookshelf I made in 8th grade that I would be devastated if it got damaged.

    Thanks for the response.

  • If your H's job paying for the move? We had a specific amount we were given to move here and we knew we'd be renting a furnished flat so we got rid of almost everything and left a few pieces of furniture (and a million boxes) in our parents' houses. If his job is paying to ship back and forth then I'd bring stuff that you're attached to but just be prepared for it to take a while to show up.

  • Is that a newfie!?!?!?!!!

I have nothing helpful to add, other than welcome to Spain!

  • My biggest concern would be if the oversized sofa will even fit into a European apartment.  If it doesn't then what will you do with it?

  • Can I have your dogs? I'm in love, they are adorable!

Do you know where you are going to be living yet?

We brought furniture with us and regret some of it (we are in London). Our cute small Pottery Barn couch didn't fit up the stairwell of our first flat and we had to donate it. We decided to move after the first year and found an amazing flat that we loved but it is furnished. We had to break down a few things put it in storage and we have a million chairs we make it work.

We are happy that we have our dining room table and bed, anything else we could have got cheaply here.

  • More nesties in Spain!  Woohoo!

Other than that and that you won't need to learn a lick of Spanish to survive in Gran Canarias I don't have much else to say.  No advice on moving furniture from this gal, but GL figuring it all out!

  • If the move is paid, and you really want the overstuffed sofa, you should bring it. We have one here, and it's the only one I've ever seen in the city.

That said, it does fill our entire living room. In retrospect, as much as I love it, I would have left it behind, because it takes up so much space. And we have a fairly large apartment (85 m?).

  • I think we'll compromise at a reclining loveseat and get it before we leave.

That is a Newf.  Her name is Beamer.  The best part of the Canaries is bringing the dogs is no big deal.  They are going to miss winter, but really adapt pretty well.

The other two are Great Pyrs.  The bigger is Lexi, smaller is Sanka.

The move is paid. I'm fine waiting to buy most things like a bed or a toddler bed/crib for L, but I was worried about the couch.  I hate our Ikea couch we currently have.

    Thanks for the help.
