AW, then vent. (a little long)

AW: So DH & I decided to sell my Ford Taurus b/c it's beginning to cost more than it's worth and DH's just waiting for the transmission or engine to blow.  Friday we posted it on craigslist for $300 more than KBB value ($3500 - we were optimistic based on what other ppl were charging); we got some calls on it, including one from Ray Hibdon Car Choice. RHCC said to bring our car in, they'll check it out and give us what we're asking for it or close to it. If they don't buy our car (b/c it's not what we said it was or we're asking more than they're willing to give), then we'll get a $25 gas card. Apparently the car was more awesome than we realized b/c they had no problem giving us the $3500! Yay! The whole process was so painfully easy that we left wondering if we should've asked more.

Vent: After we sold my car, we went looking at 4Runners. Went by the Toyota dealership; mostly pleasant experience (it *was* a car dealership, after all). Went by Bob Moore Cadillac. GAH! Guy named Willie sells the used cars & he was *SO* incredibly rude to me! I asked if they were willing to budge on price, and I mentioned that we had just come from the Toyota dealership. He said "I've been in sales 5 years and everyone says that" in this voice that implied I was a liar. The car looked like it an been in a minor accident and he wouldn't answer any questions about it. What took the cake: after H test-drove the vehicle, he commented about the tires being almost bald. Willie said "well it rode smooth!" I said "It doesn't matter; we're going to have to replace those tires and we'll be out another $600." The douchebag put his hand in. my. face. and said "That's not the point.  The car drove smooth." I almost put the baby down to punch him in the face. He was totally disrespectful - I think b/c I'm a woman.  Needless to say, we left with my H holding me back. :(

  • Congrats on selling your car. Sorry you had to deal with a major d-bag at the other dealership. I don't think C would have been able to hold be back if I got treated like that. Hope you find what your looking for soon.

  • I have had three cars in a one year period - I am not proud of this, btw - so I can say that I am a car buying expert - go to Dallas.  For one thing, because the supply is so high, their prices are cheaper and for whatever reason, the people that work at the dealerships aren't so skeevy. I have had really good luck at Sewell on Mockingbird (GREAT LUCK!) and we just bought my Elantra at the Hyundai dealership (Eckert) in Denton.  Our experience at Eckert was ridiculous awesome.  Sewell has a ton of different types of used cars - it is worth your time to get connected with someone down there.
  • We almost went to Dallas! H bought his Tacoma there at Champion Motors in '09. Guy was nice and we got an amazing deal (2 yrs later and his truck is still worth more than we bought it for).  We just have 2 DDs 3 y/o & younger to drag around so we wanted to stay closer to home.

We agreed to buy the 4Runner @ Hudiberg, but they have to give the car an alignment 1st. Sucky thing is that there's only 1 key to the car and they won't give me another for free.  I guess I can't complain too much b/c H says I'm getting the car under BBV.

I still feel nervous though b/c I've never spent that much on a car.  The only thing in my life that I've had that expensive is my student loan, lol.

  • That's great you sold your old car so easily! I've only bought one car in my life, so I love hearing car buying stories so I know what to look out for when I buy another one in the future.

  • Congrats on selling the car!  That's awesome.

I know how you feel with car salesmen.  They're awful to deal with.  I remember it being a stressful, awful process when we bought first vehicle after getting married.  Our last vehicle purchases were pretty stress free because we knew the guy we bought them from and just ended up having him order us what we wanted.  He gave us a great deal.  Unfortunately he's no longer in the car business, so this next go round will be yucky for us I'm sure.

  • Thanks!

The thing I prefer to look for when I'm getting ready to buy a car is a place that's under Blue Book with no haggle pricing - it's less stress.  I bought my first car from Enterprise Rent-a-Car, and H bought his from Champion Motors in Arlington, TX.  With both cars, we went in knowing WYSIWYG.

Good luck with your next car! :)

  • Stories like your make me SO thankful that my dad is in the car business (not a salesman, BTW).  I dread the day when he is no longer working, I may never want to buy another car again OR take one in for service.
  • Ugh, buying a car makes me want to vomit.  I told H next time I'm staying home.
