Suggestions/help with a new Christmas tradition for baby

I absolutely love the holidays, especially Christmas, and we had lots of special traditions growing up that I plan to continue with my DS, who is now 5 months old. I do want to start some special new traditions of our own, though, and was wondering if anyone had ideas for unique kid centered traditions. Also, I am a teacher & love reading, so I know that I want to start some sort of Christmas countdown/advent calendar of reading a different Christmas book each night in December counting down to Christmas. So far, I haven't come up with a cute/creative way to do this instead or just picking up a new book to read each night....any ideas? TIA!

Re: Suggestions/help with a new Christmas tradition for baby

  • When we had DD we took her  with us to look at Christmas lights. There is a cool house by us tht synchronizes the lights to music and DD loves to go and watch.

    Let me see what else.

Well if my husband has Christmas Eve off we go out for breakfast and then take DD to see Santa Claus at Bass Pro shop.  THey have a fantastisc Christmas exhibit.

We try to go to a local church to hear Christmas carols.

We might see a Christmas movie at the theater when the kids are older and can sit through one.  Until then we just watch them at home.

We do the Elf on a Shelf  thing. Some people don't like it  but I think it is fun.  http://www.elfontheshelf.com/#/home

My husband usually decorates a few batches of sugar cookies.  It was his favorite tradition growing up and wants to continue it.

On Christmas Eve we read Twas the night before Christmas and set out cookies and milk for Santa and carrots for the reindeer.

We also give her one gift to open and I think we are going to start making the gift Christmas pajamas.

On Christmas monring we read a Nativity Story pop up book  and get our stockings and open the gifts from Santa that have been wrapped in special Santa paper.

  • I have a book, "A Story A Day Til Christmas'. It's pretty old and it's falling apart now, but I still love it. If you want to look for it, it is edited by Nan Roloff and has a variety of stories in it. An extra perk is some of the stories are multicultural. There's a story about Christmas in Spain, it has the Nativity story, etc... here's a link to it on amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/STORY-DAY-TIL-CHRISTMAS/dp/B000PHHLQY/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1316371606&sr=1-1 Maybe you can create a tradition of a special Christmas CD you play while decorating the house? We had one, Mannheim Steamroller's first christmas CD. You could buy your DS a new ornament every christmas, you could do a Christmas morning photo every year. You could go do some sort of volunteer thing every holiday season. Maybe this year you might help help him donate gently used clothes and toys he's outgrown, and in future years he can help pick out the things he wants to donate. Or Do an Angel tree each year.
  • Some things we do now (and some are for the future when she is older) are:

    - Buy her an ornament every year. I plan to give these to her when she moves out so she has Christmas ornaments with a history. I plan on picking out one that symbolizes something special we did or she accomplished or just enjoyed that year. This year she started her first dance class (she's 2 1/2) so I plan to buy an ornament to do with that.

    - Drive around looking at Christmas Lights while playing Christmas music in the car.

    - We always have a souffle on Chrsitmas Eve and homemade Cinnamon Buns on Chrsitmas morning.

    - I think I will  get an Elf on the Shelf for this year, looks fun.

    - Baking and leaving cookies for Santa and Carrots for the reindeer.

    - I like the idea of going out for breakfast on Christmas Eve, think we will do that!

    - Advent Calendars, forgot to add that!

  • I have a 7 year old and a 18 month old. Love all the ideas so far. We always take my 7 year old starting the beginning of December to look at the different lights one night out of the week. He loves going out in his jammies with hot cocoa.

We do elf on a shelf and even on almost 8 years old  my oldest still loves it. Its so much fun to wake up the next morning to see the look on his face when he finds where the elf is.

  • You might look into your / dh's culture and find out if there are any traditions that represent your ethnic/national background.  DH is Italian, so we do seven fishes every year for Christmas eve.  It's funny, b/c dh's family never did that, but his family lived a more "Italian" life than we did, so I feel the need to cement it more with my kids (also the fish is a more Sicilian tradition, and his family is not Sicilian).

We go to church on Christmas eve, then drive around looking at lights.  The kids decorate cookies for Santa.

On Christmas day, we have some kind of sit-dodwn breakfast after the kids open their gifts.

  • My friend always got to open a gift of new pj's on Christmas Eve, then they'd wear them to bed that night.  That way the kids have cute pj's on for pictures Christmas morning.

I think the ornament idea is a great idea.  Places like Hobby Lobby have some beautiful ones for pretty cheap too, so it wouldn't be like you have to buy a $30 ornament each year.
