Can anyone rec' a south side jeweler? TIA

We used Shortt's my whole life, until just a few years ago, and my parents switched to Huntington's, but I don't know... I don't like them.  And they are going to charge $60 to check and redip my wedding band.  That just seems high to me.  Plus, they don't do it in-house.

Shortt's will only charge $30 - $35, but they gave me a line about how the wedding band I wanted wouldn't look good (this was over a year ago, when we were looking for my band) so I don't even know if I want to use them at this point.  I think my wedding band is beautiful, thankyouverymuch.  :-)  BUT, it's cheaper and they do it in-house, which I like.

Anyway, long story short, I thought I'd ask for rec's here for any other good SW side jewelers.  Thanks!

  • Lewis Jewelers. My husband and Tim, the owner, have been buds for years. We never go anywhere else.

For the record, dipping IS expensive.

  • I second Lewis Jewelers. They are the absolute best. They treat me like I'm their best customer every single time I'm there, and we haven't even made that many purchases with them. I'm sure they treat everyone that way. Their jewelry is good quality and their customer service is fantastic.

  • Awesome!  Thanks.  I called Lewis and they only charge $30 for dipping as well, so that's great.  Way better than $60.  lol

  • I have no reccommendation since we got my rings at Jared's in Tulsa. C paid an extra $80 when he purchased both of my rings to cover lifetime dipping. I have them checked every 6 months so my upgrade warranty stays good and I have them dipped every 6 months. That $80 was money well spent.

I can't believe more jewelry stores don't offer a lifetime dipping for a small fee in the beginning.

  • I don't understand this dipping thing. I had my other set for four years and never had to have them "dipped" - what is this?
  • It's rhodium plating for white gold.

I've had my wedding set for almost 7 years now and they still look great.  I haven't had to have them dipped.  I am very hard on my rings too.  Maybe it has something to do with your skin's acidity?  Perhaps it wears differently on certain people?

I had mine dipped once (when I soldered my rings together, they dipped it too). It was VERY shiny after that. I haven't done it since, and it's been three years. They're a little duller on the bottom side, but hardly discolored at all. I may do it again sometime in the next few years, but it's not high on the priority list.

However, I have seen some people who need them dipped more than once a year. I don't know why some do and don't.. BoyMom's guess is a good one.

Same here - I am really hard on my rings and haven't had any issues. I still wear my original wedding bands and they look perfect.

We got my wedding band cheap online (from an Amazon seller, actually, and it's amethyst) so I have to have it checked and dipped locally somewhere.  My e-ring was bought from Blue Nile and they offer free lifetime checks and dipping, so that's not the issue... just my wedding band.  :-)

And I do think it has to do with (for lack of a better term) your chemical makeup.  My ering is 18K white gold and my wedding band is 14K white gold, and they have both worn the same.  I'm sure other people don't notice, but I do.  And I had my ering redipped right before the wedding, and OMG, SO shiny!  So now I want to try to get it redone once a year.

I love the look of "white gold," but it is higher maintenance than regular gold to keep looking nice. I had my e-ring dipped 2 1/2 years ago, and it's looking dull again. But my wedding ring looks the same, so it's hard to tell they're worn unless you compare them to a new ring- soo much shiner. However, I'm too cheap and/or lazy to get mine redipped on a regular basis so I'll just have to live with it.

  • I think mine does have something to do with the acidity in my body. I am hard on my rings too but they look horrible on the bottom esp so I get them dipped often. I also have to watch my watches because the silver plating will start chipping on the bottoms aswell and I only wear Fossil because everything else quits working after I wear it a fee days.

  • Lewis Jewelers is awesome.  I just had my rings dipped last month after wearing them for 6 years.  They did my engagement ring for free (and will continue to do so) because we bought it there.  It cost $30 to do my wedding band which we purchased elsewhere.  They came back looking brand new.  I was amazed at the difference it made!
  • Thanks everyone!  I'm going to go with Lewis for sure.
