Re: how do you control toys

  • Try holding a yard sale or using a consignment shop or kids sale to sell the excess toys. There is always donating to charity too. I try to go through my stepdaughters toys every few months to see what she has outgrown. If you feel the toys are getting out of control try limiting family from buying so many.

  • why do you feel bad? for every toy that comes in one has to go out. we have a place we donate them to monthly. I also rotate toys. I have two storage containers and once a month I box up some toys and then bring the previous months boxed toys out for play. it's like Christmas for my DD seeing "new" toys when I bring that box out. less clutter and I do not buy her new things except for birthdays.
  • I struggle with the toys too. We don't make much os when I am able to buy something for DD I think I form an emotional attachment. Where she is done with it in a short time and plays with other things.

I had to have her pick the stuff to get rid of. We made a game of it while cleaning. Things went in 3 places, a throw away pile for broken or worn out stuff (not too much of this usually it was play clothes that got torn) a give away box and back where it goes in the playroom.

  • have you tried a rotation system, where some toys are out and the rest in a less accessible place?  That would make it easier to rotate toys out forever as they are outgrown.

You can leave the best toys, like building blocks, accessible year round but others will be a nice surprise or present as they come back.

I do think that having the kids participate in the 'giving forward' of toys prior to xmas or birthdays is an important step in the process for them. We never did that in my house growing up and I have hoarding tendencies b/c of it - nothing terrible, just that is often takes a friend to say something in order to get me to realize I need to purge my clothes or something.

  • Luckily DD's birthday and xmas are about 6 months apart so it works out well going through them before each event.  Broken or mismatched stuff I thorw out, and toys that I feel like she's outgrown I give away to friends or CL/Ebay.

For storage, I have everything in bins w/lids, in our tv stand, and in a storage ottoman. Everything is in our living room and always looks pretty neat, if I do say so myself. lol

I hate to say it, but I really try to control what toys she gets as gifts from family.  Thankfully everyone is really open to suggestions so it works out.

  • Your post reminded me of this great idea I saw last year...still relevant and may help!
